Jackie Chan Explains Why "Rush Hour 3" Didn't Happen
Macleans Magazine (by way of The Associated Press) shares an illuminating little chat with legendary action star Jackie Chan, and the personable movie veteran had some pretty candid things to say about Mr. Chris Tucker and his rather lofty "Rush Hour 3" demands.
"He wants too much power. The movie company hasn't obliged. He wants final editing rights and the final look at the movie and so on ... When he asks me what I want, I say, 'I don't care,' and he'll scold me, saying, 'They make so much money off us. We'll have to get it back."
So, movie fans, there you have it, right from the co-star of the resoundingly popular "Rush Hour" movies: You won't be getting another sequel because the star of "Money Talks" wanted too much money ... and final cut!
No offense to Mr. Tucker, but I just gotta say it: The guy's done two whole movies in the last eight years, both of which are called "Rush Hour." When exactly did he become Tom Cruise?
Anyway, head over to Macleans for the rest of the Jackie Chan interview -- and hey, let's not bash Chris Tucker too mercilessly; his greed just prevented us from sitting through a "Rush Hour 3." Thanks, Chris!

Terr writes: on Jul 08 2005 05:16 AM No surprise here I knew a little after the first Rush Hour that Tucker was going to price himself out of a career. Since it was a success, he figured he was worth 20 million a movie. Well, no one's gonna pay him anywhere near that, except for Rush Hour 2. After that was a hit, his ego has swollen even more. After a while he'll realize that he's really hurting his career. (Reply to this) |

Prosper761 writes: on Jul 08 2005 09:27 AM Tucker is an idiot Who the hell does he think he is? No one who saw either of those movies went to see a Chris Tucker movie; they went to see a Jackie Chan movie. Chan may not be a brilliant (Okay - not even a "good") actor, but the one or two films of his I have seen have been entertaining and fun... Chan is an excelleant stunt man and seems to have a great sense of humor about himself. He is far more interested in making sure his fas are entertained than anything else, and he's smart enough to know that he makes money off of his fans, without whom he wouldn't have a career. When annoying and shrill C-listers like Tucker start making A-list demands, it's time to knock them down to Kathy Griffin's infamous D-list. (Reply to this) |

gateway_gamer writes: on Jul 08 2005 09:38 AM Thanks a lot Chris Tucker. Some of us (like me) liked the first two Rush Hour movies, and we would have liked another one. And why the heck are we giving Jackie Chan crap about this? None of this is his fault. He's an actor, his job is to act. Making the final cut is not his job, despite what Tucker may think. I've seen Rock's name erroneously listed in Rush Hour credits a hundred times. It would make for more jokes. "Carter, you little shorter today" (Reply to this) |

amamamy writes: on Jul 08 2005 11:51 AM Funny story about Chris Rock/Tucker Several years ago, I was at the Beverly Center Mall with some friends for lunch and Chris Rock was sitting alone at a table eating a sandwich. One friend of mine thought it would be funny to tell Chris Rock that he was good in Rush Hour (being that he wasn't IN Rush Hour) so he did it (despite our urging him to leave the man alone with his lunch). Chris Rock looked up at him, smiled and graciously said, "Hey, thanks man." My friend paused and reminded him, "Uh, you weren't in Rush Hour." Chris Rock looked at him again and said something like, "Yeah? You you're the one who said it." Funny. (Reply to this) |

The Senhman writes: on Jul 08 2005 01:11 PM In reply to this comment (#823995) Chan genuinely loves making movies. I think he said "I don't care" because he felt like his compensation was good enough. In another interview, he mentioned that even though his salary is "only" $20M for Rush Hour 3, the backend deal will net him another $20M. So in total, he'll end up with something like $40M for Rush Hour 3. He mentioned that he's still receiving monthly checks from DVD sales/rental of the previous Rush Hour films. (Reply to this) |

BigDaddyChaCha writes: on Jul 08 2005 04:44 PM I don't know what all the Chris Tucker hate is about. Personally, I would love to see him in more movies and think that he is a lot funnier than Chris Rock. He was great in 5th Element. And forget Jackie Chan--What about Jackie Brown? Tucker's Bolemont character damn-near stole the scene from Samuel L. Jackson! ("Maan, I'm home, I'm high...!") Who really cares about Rush Hour anyways? Yes, they were entertaining, but beyond that, weren't they pretty much just race-jokes every 30 seconds? Sugar-coating racism, contrary to Hollywood's beliefs, does not a great movie make. I can live without Jackie Chan, but by all means, bring on more Chris Tucker. Pay the man! -Cha. (Reply to this) |

dylan21484nj writes: on Jul 08 2005 05:10 PM no surprise, Tucker has gotten full of himself make a few few million, have a few hits film, now you want more. so you've had a little success, Chris. there are lot more people out there who have had MORE success than you who still don't ask for as much as you do. you want final cut of Rush Hour 3? why don't you ask to write and direct it, while you're at it. your Rush Hour costar Jackie Chan has broken just about every bone in his body making films, why isn't he asking for the world? if anyone deserves the big bucks, it's someone who has put his body on the line for the sake of entertaining people. but he doesn't because he's grateful for his fame and success and remains modest about it. MODESTY, Chris. look into it. (Reply to this) |

Scott Weinberg writes: on Jul 08 2005 11:29 PM Jackie Chan might not be an Oscar-caliber actor by ANY stretch of the imgaination, but he's got a style, enthusiasm, class, and personality that leave Chris Tucker looking like a pizza delivery boy. For a screech-voiced cipher of a comedian to demand this sort of power is just mind-boggling. Meanwhile, one of moviedom's finest action stars is treated with a stunning amount of disrespect. Chan's American films are, for the most part, pretty awful - but obviously the guy deserves better than being left out to dry by Tucker and his amazingly obnoxious behavior. Jackie Chan will be remembered. Chris Tucker will be laughed at. (Reply to this) |
