Saw V Arriving in 2009?
Lionsgate giving Jigsaw a year off?
Ready for more Saw sequels, horror fans? Lionsgate sure hopes so.
Bloody-Disgusting reports that Saw V and Saw VI are officially a go, will be filmed back-to-back, and will be directed by David Hackl. Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, the screenwriting team behind Saw IV, will be back for the next two sequels.
Those sequels, however, might take a little longer to ooze out of the studio pipeline -- according to Bloody-Disgusting's report, "Lionsgate is planning on skipping October 2008 for the next Saw film, although that news is yet to be confirmed." For filmgoers experiencing Jigsaw fatigue, this will no doubt come as a relief; from a business perspective, however, it seems like a questionable decision. Horror trends being as cyclical as they are, it would seem to be in Lionsgate's best interests to continue exploiting the franchise annually until it runs completely out of steam.
The question of the series' continued drawing power will be largely answered by the box-office performance of Saw IV, which reaches theaters next week. Place your bets here!

reavus4983 writes: on Oct 19 2007 08:51 AM These movies have gotten progressively worse and are ruining the horror genre with this torture crap. Their quality is as low as the Cube movies on Sci Fi, which look like The Shining compared to these. Zombie movies make money too and aren't despicable, so why can't people make tons of those? Ghost movies with John Cusack? They could at least put some watchable actors in the Saw movies to help boost their careers. I'd watch Nathan Fillion get tortured and come back to life and beat up Jigsaw. I am looking forward to 30 Days of Night primarily because it's one of the only popular horror movies out any more that had its budgett spent on "creative" ways to kill people (aside from the fact that it has Ben Foster and vampires). Even after this rant, I need to admit that I've seen the sequels in theaters because ironically torture-gore make good date movies and I'm ashamed that for this reason I will probably go see Saw IV too, and then afterwards complain about how I spent money on it again. dOiNk writes: on Oct 19 2007 09:47 AM haha, i love all the saw hate in here. you guys take this **** way too seriously, it's like you're all pretending to be critics or something. The movies are fun and great for halloween. They offer a pretty good story with some nice and unexpected twists, and the gore is freaking great. I'm so glad we have this franchise for halloween because without it we'd have nothing. (Reply to this) |

kgochs writes: on Oct 19 2007 10:02 AM Agreed dOiNk. By the way, how many of you geniuses, that know so much about making a horror movie and marketing them, have actually made one? Are there any discussions where people actaully are NOT cynical or complaining on this website??? (Reply to this) |

wallstreet_jony writes: on Oct 19 2007 10:30 AM whats so sad about it? The studio has found a successul way of making a healthy profit an a consistent basis with horror movies, specifically the Saw franchise, because their less expensive to make and draw in a large crowd (primarily dates and youth). You should be glad that Lions Gate can make this profit because it allows them to bring on less popular risky projects that may otherwise be left unmade due to lack of financial backing and thus give us great results like = Crash and American Psycho (Reply to this) |

Elixor writes: on Oct 19 2007 10:44 AM Not that I've been thrilled with any of the Saw movies (thought the first one was the worst one), but I do get some sick entertainment out of the puzzles and devices they come up with in these movies. I'm hoping for more of these in the next movie and less retarted tie-ins to the original boring story. It is getting old however and making a fifth and sixth movie so soon is a bad idea. Hopefully Lions Gate can eat a bunch of cheese and get the fifth and sixth movies to "ooze out of the studio pipeline" even slower. (Reply to this) |

blackchimera writes: on Oct 19 2007 11:41 AM OK, those of you freaking out about those of us who don't care for another SAW...chill. Seriously. If you like it that much, who the hell am I to tell you NOT to think that way? Just...stop with the bitching and let the people speak their opinions. I had no problem with a trilogy. I just think it gets a tad redundant after three movies of people being tortured. Just my thoughts. Carry on. (Reply to this) |
