In director Edward Dmytryk's suspenseful World War II drama, two prisoners escape from Alcatraz and hide out in a lighthouse that turns out to be a rendezvous point for Nazi spies and a submarine. James Craig and Frank Jenks play the convicts, Champ and Jimbo, who eventually decide to put a stop to the Nazis' nefarious activity because even lousy Americans can be patriotic. The spies are headed by an evil baroness (Tala Birell) and her ruthless Aryan liaison, Fritz (John Banner). A good-hearted lighthouse keeper (George Cleveland) and his attractive young daughter (Bonita Granville) are among the hostages caught in the cross fire. This was one of Dmytryk's early B-movies. He would go on to make MURDER MY SWEET the following year and elevate his stature to that of an A-list director, earning the unofficial title of Father of Film Noir before being blacklisted as a communist in the early 1950s.
