It's obvious, but it needs to be said: oh Maggie, baby.

Consensus: Maggie Gyllenhaal delivers riveting performance as a recovering drug addict in a depressing and not entirely believable movie.

Gyllenhaal stars as Sherry Swanson, a troubled woman who has just been released from prison, where she spent three years for robbery to support her heroin addiction. Determined to regain control of her life, she moves into a halfway house and starts looking for a job, being carefully watched by her tough parole officer (Giancarlo Esposito). At an AA meeting, she is drawn to Dean Walker (Danny Trejo), a gritty older man who befriends her--but his ties to her dangerous past life threaten to pull her back in. Sherry's main desire is to reestablish a relationship with her young daughter, Alexis (Ryan Simpkins), who is being raised by Sherry's brother, Bobby (Brad William Henke), and his wife, Lynnette (Bridget Barkan)--but Lynnette doesn't trust Sherry, wanting to keep Alexis for her own. As Sherry struggles to get back on track, she plays by her own rules, with drugs and a return to prison waiting just around the corner. Gyllenhaal gives a raw, bare, powerful performance as the embattled and desperate Sherry, who will do almost anything to regain her daughter's love. Loosely based on the story of one of Collyer's closest childhood friends, SHERRYBABY, which got its start in the Sundance Filmmaker's Lab, is an emotional rollercoaster of a movie, with realistic characters, an excellent cast, and plenty of surprising turns. Reviews for Sherrybaby
Gyllenhaal couldn't be better in service of a film that seems to focus on the wrong character; the more interesting point of view would be Bobby's, a gallant, unglamorous guy who's trying to hold his family together in the midst of Hurricane Sherry.
... Sherrybaby is not so much a film as a performance, and it's a great one from Gyllenhaal.
Gyllenhaal holds the movie together with her performance, long enough for Collyer to get the story to a place where she can put her star to good use.
Just as she did in the dark, sadomasochistic comedy "Secretary," Gyllenhaal raises her share of eyebrows here, though for a whole host of different reasons.
The compassion of Collyer's attitude toward her wayward and ultimately victimized protagonist slowly builds into a powerful statement on the possibilities of redemption for even the most lost.
Maggie Gyllenhaal is an actress you simply cannot take your eyes off of.
Gyllenhaal presents us with an indelible character study that will be seared into our minds for a long time to come.
The film works. It doesn't go soft or inspirational in its later stages, when most films would. It doesn't pump up the redemption or the melodrama.
This probably sounds like yet another dreary problem drama but there's nothing dreary about it.
What do you need to recognize a captivating screen presence that can carry a movie, an Oscar nomination? You might just get it here.
"Sherrybaby" is an insightful and penetrating drama that never condescends or sentimentalizes its subject. Maggie Gyllenhaal gives a tour de force performance that is not to be missed.
Mostly noteworthy for Maggie Gyllenhaal's realistic portrayal of a troubled woman trying to get back her daughter.
Not only does Sherrybaby stir admiration for Gyllenhaal's flexibility as an actress, but it accomplishes one of those delicate feats of good fiction: It reminds us to be empathetic to others.
It's the movie for you if you liked the pessimistic street view of Half Nelson.
