"Spidey 3," "Shrek 3," and "Pirates 3" -- Get Ready for Summer '07
by Scott Weinberg | September 26, 2006
Discuss Article
The article we're about to read is about eight days old, but it seems like a rather fun topic of discussion, so let's do it anyway. As far as Summer '07 is concerned, what's your pick: "Spider-Man 3," "Shrek the Third," or "Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End"?

Oh, and "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" and "Ocean's 13."

From Newsweek: "DreamWorks, which merged with Paramount last year, will be releasing ogre saga “Shrek the Third”; Sony sends out another edition of its webbed wonder with “Spider-Man 3”; and Disney tries to loot more of the public’s gold in “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.”

Think “War of the Worlds” was scary? This war of the tentpoles is downright frightening to anyone with a stake in the financial outcome of the pictures. And you don’t have to be working on any of the films to be affected. If one of these movies crashes, burns and disappoints financially, which is entirely possible, it could mean the loss of hundreds of jobs. From the chef in the commissary to the projectionist in the screening room, studio employees all across town will have sweaty palms as the opening dates arrive."

I didn't care for Sherk 2 so I'll wait for Shrek the third on DVD. Same goes for Piartes. Spider man I have to Admit It sounds Cool to have Venom in theory......But Then it needs to be NC-17.

Shrek 3= Harmless, but I'm not too excited.
Enthusiasm Level: 5/10

Pirates 3= It'll probably be reasonably entertaining, but sloppy . . . just like the dissappointing second installment.
Enthusiasm Level: 6/10

Harry Potter 5= Worth a look, but it isn't making me very interested. I really enjoy the book series(although I think book five is the weakest by far). None of the films have struck me as very memorable.
Enthusiasm Level: 5/10

Ocean's 13= If it's anything like the first, I'll see it opening weekend. If it's like the second, I'll pass.
Enthusiasm Level: 3/10

Spider-Man 3= I enjoyed the first, even though it was a bit hokey in places. I loved the second. As long as the story doesn't feel too "forced", I think the third will be promising as well, especially considering the great first trailer.
Enthusiasm Level: 9/10

Spiderman I'll catch opening weekend, and unless it stinks I'll see it a couple times. Pirates I'll see a couple weeks after opening, and Shrek 3 I'll rent unless the trailers amaze me. If I had to see only one, it'd be Spiderman 3. Besides, 10 to 1 says that it has the biggest box office. It'll be the first big movie of the summer, and people already know it's coming.

You mean "R"? I don't see Spiderman ever becoming NC-17 worthy...

Why would the movie need to be 'R' when the comics weren't? I think your imagination might be adding a little bit of violence, if you ask me.

Couldn't have put it any better myself. I believe that third will finally be the film when everyone realizes Raimi's a hack, and the bad taste in the mouth from the third will taint everyone;s "golden" opinion of the first two.

Haha, I believe Raimi has proved he is no hack. He's made the greatest superhero movie of all time with Spider-Man 2, and that was a follow-up to a great adaptation of the comic franchise with the first. He has one of the greatest horror cult trilogy of movies with the Evil Dead franchise. He's shown he has a flair for drama too with A Simple Plan. Plus, he's probably going to knock everyone off their feet with this third installment of Spider-Man. Hack seems a little harsh.

Just because Ebert was greased with a little under the table cash to call Spiderman 2 the greatest superhero movie ever doesn't make it so.

Shrek 3...meh. Pirates 3...'eh, the second bored me. Ocean 13...didn't see the other two, so don't care.

Harry Potter 5....I'm not really liking the pictures thus far. The others haven't been bad (well...the first two movies were....cough, yeah). I don't understand why the WB isn't releasing these movies in the fall. Hp 3 opened in summer i believe and it didn't do nearly as good as hp1, 2 or 4. This one won't make the numbers either, especially with some of these 'tentpoles' coming out around the same time.

Spidey 3...Probably most excited for this, but truth be told I'm not flipping out. I'm hoping it will be good, from the trailer it looks like it could be, but I'm refusing to get my hopes up.

Overall....the film industry in general has gone downhill with 'big name blockbusters'. Nothing has wooed me in the past couple years for the summer movie jaunt..the last probably being Episode III, and even that wasn't what it could have been. All these sequels are starting to get tiresome too.

My Box Office Prediction
I'll go so far as to guess the order of box office take, but not actual dollar guesses:

1) Pirates 3
2) Spidey 3
3) Harry Potter 5
4) Shrek 3
Waaaaaay farther down) Ocean's 13

I could go either way on Harry and Shrek, but I have a "hunch" that Harry will beat out Shrek.

Once again, haters come to bash Spidey. Amusing. Pirates will probably out gross it worldwide, but I'm guessing Spiderman will be the highest grossing movie domestic next year.

Here's my Problem with Venom they're come Carnage and Carnage uses his Symbonite to Slaughter his Victims. And I believe that Venom needs to feed off of humans to Survive. I just hope Venom Doesn't act like Gollum.

He didn't in the Comics........That's all I'm saying.

Ok, here we go. (Order by release)

Spider-Man 3- It comes out first. Then it has two weeks. If it can gross between 160 and 180 million in those two weeks, it will win overall in the American box office. I'm looking forward to it the most. I can see where people had problems with 2. I loved 1, and despite mistakes, I thought 2 carried on the spirit of 1. If they can just up the action a bit more, this'll easily be the best summer film.

Shrek 2- Last time it benefited from nothing in the area of children's entertainment, or even a worthy adversary nearby to compete. Now, it'll have Spidey 2 still strong before it. It won't even come close to killing that. Then, ONE WEEK LATER, it has to deal with pirates. The last one made over 400 million. I think they'll be lucky to make 200. Expect more in the 150 range.

Pirates 3- This one is the nearest in people's memories, and there's not a lot after it. If Spidey 3 doesn't set records, which it very well could, Pirates 3 will be the top movie of the summer in America. I'm looking forward to it. If not great, at least we know it'll be fun.

Ocean's 13- They think they're safe 2 weeks away from Pirates. If it's good, they are. It has to be as good as 11. A repeat of 12 won't cut it. I liked 12, and I say liked cuz it was a relatively fun movie. Nothing special, but not an awful way to kill a couple hours. That won't cut it 2 weeks away from Pirates. How good this movie is could decide whether Spidey 3 or Pirates 3 take top honors for the summer.

Ratatouille- After Cars, I'll never again keep a Disney/Pixar out of my blockbuster list. Expect between 150 and 250 million. Anticipation for this is higher than for Cars, and that topped 200 easily. It could pass up Shrek 3 as the third highest grosser of the summer if its good.

Transformers- High profile Michael Bay 80's cartoon CGI remake. Is there anything that screams summer more? And by screams summer, I mean everything bad about summer. Don't expect much.

Harry Potter 5- 4 was the best one in my opinion. However, most fans said 4 was a good book. Most fans also said 5 was a boring book. I'm sorry, but I just can't sit through 3 hours of boring. If that's the fan reaction, think about your casual viewer. Unless its done right, this may not perform up with the big 3. If done well, it can make a dent, especially considering it's a bit separated from the other huge premiers.
