When suburban couple Harry and Tacey King (Robert Young and Maureen O'Hara ) can no longer handle their three intractable sons alone, they hire a baby-sitter sight unseen through an ad in the paper. Their new employee turns out to be not only male--a shock to the Kings--but an eccentric, vegetarian, yoga-practicing genius with vast worldly experience. Mr. Belvedere (Clifton Webb), whose previous occupations include being an obstetrician, a dance instructor, and a locksmith, quickly displays a unique and witty way with the children while also fixing items around the house and cooking delicious meals. But when snooping neighbors begin to spread nasty rumors about the King's unusual hired help, Tacey's good reputation is put in jeopardy, as is Harry's position at his law firm. Brilliant writing, inspired lead acting on the part of Webb, and excellent support from Young and O'Hara combine to make SITTING PRETTY--a smash hit upon its release in 1948--a lasting grab bag of inspired, unaldulterated fun.
