Consensus: Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is slim on plot and characterization, but the visuals more than make up for it.

In writer-director Kerry Conran's debut film, ace pilot Joe "Sky Captain" Sullivan (Jude Law) reluctantly teams up with his former flame, journalist Polly Perkins (Gwyneth Paltrow), to uncover the mystery behind a group of missing scientists and a series of shocking robot attacks. Aided by gadgetry whiz Dex Dearborn (Giovanni Ribisi) and enigmatic military commander Franky Cook (Angelina Jolie), Joe and Polly must find out who is responsible for an increasingly elaborate scheme that may trigger the end of the world. A highly stylized, mostly computer-generated spectacle, SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW is a striking cinematic achievement. Steeped in the marvelous visuals of 1930s pop culture, Conran's movie is a loving tribute to that era, featuring clever nods to FLASH GORDON, BUCK ROGERS, and other adventure serials of the time. Beginning in a gloriously slate-gray, towering New York City, this movie follows its heroes from one intriguing locale to the next. Although the remarkable images of the film threaten to eclipse the characters at times, SKY CAPTAIN is very well cast, with the actors pitch-perfect for their respective roles, particularly the luminous Paltrow and the brainy Ribisi. And yet the stunning retro-futuristic design is always at the fore, making for a wonderfully unique movie. [More]

Reviews for Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
As the novelty wears off, it becomes increasingly apparent that what's going on in the background is more interesting than what's happening in the foreground.
If an unknown can make such believable CGI, why can’t George Lucas and ILM?
The scenes are superbly imaginative and yet so real that they feel half-remembered.
I was impressed by Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, but I didn't like it much.
You're more taken with its cleverness than swept up in wonder. Still, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow's goofy, ephemeral pleasures are difficult to resist.
Drawing from a well of pulp fiction, film noir and comic book imagery -- not to mention influences from The Wizard of Oz to Fritz Lang's Metropolis -- Conran and crew evoke a highly stylized 1939.
A piece of visual wizardry...[but] more Rocketeer than Indiana Jones, more admirable exercise than actual fun.
(Conran's) passion for this particular story elevates his film to great heights. Pour yourself a large glass of chocolate Ovaltine and enjoy.
not just the best sci-fi flick since Minority Report, it’s also one of the best films of the year, making wannabe event movies like Spider-Man 2 look like chump change.
A beguilingly unreal excursion into the imaginative world of another age must viewing for golden-age Hollywood buffs impresses without becoming truly engaging.
