Though containing a number of lighter scenes and blessed with a strong sense of humanity (a Cromwell trademark), the film pulls no punches and is all the stronger for it.

Life, love, and liberty are all at risk in this authentic and touching story based on tales from Erich Maria Remarque's FLOTSAM. SO ENDS OUR NIGHT explores the lives of five individuals irrevocably damaged by the Nazi party's takeover of Germany. Joseph Steiner (Fredric March) and Ludwig Kern (Glenn Ford) are two political refugees whose lives are in constant danger from the Nazi advance across Europe. Both men are avidly pursued by the villainous Brenner, played admirably by Erich Von Stroheim. Steiner endangers himself by repeatedly returning to Nazi territory to visit his beloved, sickly wife, Marie (Frances Dee), while Kern and his love, Ruth Holland (Margaret Sullavan), seek freedom in soon-to-be-occupied France. The performances from the star-studded cast are finely tuned by director John Cromwell (THE PRISONER OF ZENDA, OF HUMAN BONDAGE) and heightened by the stunning sets of William Cameron Menzies, making for a subtle, restrained masterpiece. Reviews for So Ends Our Night
A mess of melodramatic puffery that ultimately trivializes the tragedy it wants to spotlight.
