Aesthetically, the film finds Bertolucci in a transitory mode, caught between his early Godard-influenced abstraction and his later style of lush, operatic camera movements and theatrical use of color and music.

The investigation of the thirty-year-old murder of his father proves troublesome for Athos Magnani (Giulio Brogi)--all the more so because his father is a hero of anti-Fascism whose alleged martyrdom was an inspiration to an entire town. In fact, legend has it that he was killed for plotting to kill Mussolini himself. Working from the short story "Theme of the Traitor and Hero" by Jorge Luis Borges, director Bernardo Bertolucci investigates some favorite themes, including the conscience of his countrymen and the presence of psychological doubles (reinforced by having Brogi play both Athos and his father, seen in flashbacks). Bertolucci made THE CONFORMIST in the same year, but whereas the hero of that film gladly submits to being controlled, Athos manages to pursue the truth despite everyone in the town manipulating him. The lush Po Valley adds splendid background; the color in the film has a grainy, realistic look because Bertolucci chose to film using only natural light. [More]

Reviews for The Spider's Stratagem
Full of mysteries, omens, ambiguities, and signs of incipient madness, and it resolves itself into a riddle that is the cinema's richest homage to all that's remarkable in Borges.
It's a movie with a beautiful cinematic grace, a way of establishing atmosphere and furthering plot without a lot of talking.
Much of it is intriguing and the photography (by Storaro), sometimes evoking the paintings of De Chirico, is memorable.
