In Bombay, Parsi family man and bank clerk Gustad Noble (Seth) has carved out a peaceful daily routine for himself amidst the city's crowded streets, insistent beggars and ceaselessly honking car horns. In the space of a few days, however, his quiet existence begins to fall apart. His rebellious college student son runs away, his young daughter contracts malaria and his wife begins practicing witchcraft under the tutelage of the crazy old woman upstairs. When Gustad receives a message from a mysterious old friend asking for a favor, he doesn't think twice. He is asked to meet a stranger at a bookseller's stall in the marketplace to pick up a bag. Upon his arrival at home, Gustad discovers that the bag contains a large amount of Indian currency, which he must take the risk of depositing in a bank account. Unfortunately, his old friend is involved in some very dangerous and illegal political dealings, and Gustad's involvement will cause him to question his loyalty to his family, his friends and his own faith. Reviews for Such a Long Journey
To watch the film is to feel somewhat cheated. Unfortunately, it is clear we are viewing the cut-and-pasted pieces of a larger and presumably more moving whole.
