A resident of the xenophobic town of Carranco, Ramon works at his mom's general store and admires from afar the beautiful Adela (Laila Saab), whose family is new in town. His life changes drastically one morning when he discovers Adela's body in an oat field. He covers her with his shirt, and is then assumed by the townsfolk to be her lover, as well as a prime suspect in her murder. Ramon's godfather, Justino (Héctor Alterio), is the town sheriff, who maintains his integrity on a force full of corrupt cops, and argues Ramon's innocence. Meanwhile, the other villagers become convinced that the culprit is El Gitano (Karra Elejalde), an itinerant with many local lovers. Ramon is swept up in the fantasy that he was in fact Adela's lover and must avenge her death, getting carried away in the tide of machismo that characterizes the culture, while many of the characters must make life-altering decisions stemming from their roles in the mystery.
