The paranoid fascism of Nazi Germany provides the backdrop for this story about Hamburg's youth and their love for restricted American music -- music often written and played by both Blacks and Jews. Peter and Thomas, "swing kids" who listen to jazz even though it's illegal, get drawn into Nazi Youth. Peter, who enlisted only to save his life, manages to resist their brainwashing; but Thomas, who joined just to stay by Peter, finds the movement increasingly seductive. As the paths of the two boys diverge, their friendship disintegrates, leading to a violent, dangerous betrayal. [More]

A tepid, pretentious melodrama that happens to contain a few rousing dance-hall sequences.
