It's a predictable, feel-good fantasy in the mould of a political satire and the result is a good one.

Consensus: Despite Kevin Costner providing his most charismatic performance in years, Swing Vote fails to find the right mix of political satire and heartfelt drama.

He works in an egg factory, likes to knock back a few too many beers, and is a single parent to 12-year old Molly (Madeline Carroll), a bright spitfire who does her best to keep her dad on the straight and narrow. Patriotic Molly insists that apathetic Bud do his civic duty and vote in the upcoming presidential election, a tight race between Republican incumbent Andrew Boone (Kelsey Grammer) and Democratic candidate Donald Greenleaf (Dennis Hopper). Soon the media and both candidates descend upon Bud's hometown of Texico, New Mexico, when it's determined that his vote wasn't counted and will decide the outcome of the entire presidential election. Now that Bud is a "somebody"--there's even a "Bud Cam" capturing his every move--will he be swayed by visits to Air Force One and the "Bud Ball" held in his honor, or will he be the voice of the American people and vote for the better candidate? The lengths the candidates go to in order to win Bud's vote are high points of the film, as they find themselves supporting initiatives that are completely opposed to their platforms at the urging of their campaign managers, played by Stanley Tucci and Nathan Lane. Grammer is well cast as Boone, and it's a hoot to see counterculture icon Hopper in this light. Costner makes Bud likable despite the loser stereotype he personifies. But this film belongs to Carroll, a lovely young actress who can steal a scene with one look. If nothing else, SWING VOTE is a reminder that even though politics may be a game, every single vote really does count. [More]

Reviews for Swing Vote
Smart, sharp, and savvy while still being eminently likaeable, this is a film that doesn't create stock villains and heroes
In this climate, Kevin Costner’s boldly heartfelt new film Swing Vote is strange indeed.
It's funny, sad, involving, and very well made. This is one of the big surprises of the summer.
The "wow" factor in 'Swing Vote' is Madeline Carroll's impressive screen presence. She's a power to be reckoned with, so watch your back, Abigail Breslin!
After years of misfires, Kevin Costner has hit upon a strategy to make himself likable in a movie: by playing someone completely unlikable.
If Swing Vote seems ridiculously improbable (and it is), then it might be best to remind yourself that the presidency coming down to the votes of just one county in Florida seemed far-fetched once upon a time, too.
A rocky start aside, this blend of timely political satire and father/daughter heart warmer offers enough truth about media manipulation and voter pandering to win over an undemanding audience.
Sometimes, an actor's enthusiasm for a role can carry a performance past its more awkward moments.
A disarming political satire perfectly calibrated to the national mood and to its revitalized star.
Swing Vote captures the spirit of an election year when many once-apathetic Americans are keenly interested in the outcome. We have met the enemy and he is us. But so is the hero.
As a political shaggy dog story, [it's] an entertaining diversion from the real life 2008 campaign. For moviegoers hungry for substance, that may not be enough.
...a thoroughly affable piece of work that makes up in easy-going entertainment what it lacks in plausibility.
The film varies between ironic cynicism about the political process and overt whimsy and sentimentality.
For all its faults -- and they are numerous -- Swing Vote is a hard movie to dislike by the end simply because it nails the uplifting moment that it has spent two hours chasing.
This light satire is unlikely to influence the forthcoming election, but Costner’s in fine fettle.
Swing Vote is more subtle and insightful than the dumbed-down comedy the marketing campaign would have us believe it to be.
