Consensus: Despite some amiable performances, The Heartbreak Kid is neither as daring nor as funny as the Farrelly Brothers' earlier films.

This time around Ben Stiller plays Eddie Cantrow, a 40-year-old bachelor who is tired of having his foulmouthed father (Jerry Stiller) and henpecked friend (Rob Corddry) give him a hard time for not being married. So when he meets the seemingly perfect Lila (Malin Ackerman), he decides to marry her--despite knowing her for only six weeks. On their honeymoon in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, he realizes his mistake when Lila reveals her true colors, which turn out to be quite ugly. While Lila recovers from a sunburn, Eddie meets fellow vacationer Miranda (Michelle Monaghan) and falls in love. He must break the news to both women before they find out the truth. After the more standard romantic comedy of FEVER PITCH, Bobby and Peter Farrelly are back to the gross-out comedy that made them famous in films such as THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY. This is the first time they've re-teamed with Stiller since that landmark film, and it proves a far better marriage than Eddie and Lila's. Ackerman may be most famous to date for a small role in HAROLD & KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE, but she's fearless in this part. The Farrellys have always been fans of bodily humor, and Ackerman's Lila gets to be the butt of the joke most often, largely thanks to her character's deviated septum. There are several moments here that threaten to top the infamous hair-gel scene in THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY as far as groans and giggles go. [More]

Compared to past Farrelly movies, I found the jokes raunchy and cruel rather than funny.

The performances are almost uniformly engaging, with Stiller cycling through a catalog of sputtering resistance ploys that still work, no matter their familiarity.

There are enough really funny scenes to more than make up for the obnoxiousness and humourless stretches. Not exactly the ringing endorsement you'd hope for.

Finally the gross exploitation picture that detractors have accused the Farrellys of perpetrating throughout their career.

The Farrelly Brothers have a reputation for pushing the envelope ... but in the case of The Heartbreak Kid, they seem only marginally more daring than Robert Wise helming The Sound of Music.

[A] hit-or-miss, not-as-bad-as-you've-heard remake of the 1972 minor classic.

We deserve better than this and expect better from the Farrellys.

It'd be nice if the 2007 Heartbreak Kid had some idea of the moral stakes involved, instead of playing everything for no-brain farce.

Despite some sizeable flaws, I still recommend the movie for what it is: a laugh machine.

The Heartbreak Kid is better than I expected, but since I expected it to be a horrific failure, that isn't saying much.

An unwatchable mess like this is exactly what you ought to expect from anybody with the unmitigated gall to overhaul Neil Simon.

It’s done in bad taste, but unlike their past few films, I must admit that I laughed this time out.

Sometimes the Farrelly Brothers are spot-on when they write a comedy. And sometimes they miss the humor target more than they hit it.

There are a few hilarious scenes but no character we care about, making this remake inferior to Elaine May's 1972 film.

Will the Farrellys mine enough gross-out scenes to generate a box-office buzz? The idea that they won't is the air of desperation that hangs over the movie and which, too often, suffocates it.

I've always believed certain films should never be re-made, but 'The Heartbreak Kid' wasn't one of them. After seeing this new version, it's on my list.
