Frank Miller's Spirit Gets Its Star
Gabriel Macht to portray Eisner's creation.
by Jeff Giles | August 03, 2007
Discuss Article | Blog Article | Email To A Friend
Since being confirmed as the writer and director for 2009's live-action adaptation of the classic Will Eisner comic The Spirit, Frank Miller has resisted naming the actor who will be strapping on the domino mask, fedora, and gloves for the title role. Miller only has enough mojo to keep a secret for so long, however, and -- as Variety reports -- an announcement has finally been made.

It's official: Gabriel Macht, most recently seen in Because I Said So and The Good Shepherd, will be protecting the residents of Center City from the nefarious Octopus (rumored to be played by Samuel L. Jackson).

Never heard of him? You're not alone. But the article includes a cheerful vote of confidence from the studio:

"We think Gabriel has a devilishly charming quality, and the dry wit that embodies the Spirit, and we wanted to do this with someone who can embody this character for the next few years, because we anticipate we'll be making more than one Spirit movie," said Lionsgate prexy of film production Mike Paseornek.

(Yep. Sequels.)

Unless you're a card-carrying member of the comic fan community, it's possible you've never heard of The Spirit either, but he's actually one of the medium's oldest characters, and a creation of one of its most respected minds (they don't call the comic-industry honors the Eisner Awards for nothing). Since debuting in 1940, The Spirit has been a more or less constant fixture on comic-shop racks, either via periodic reprints of Eisner's strips or modern reinterpretations; in other words, there's a lot of history here, and if you thought making Spider-Man was a high-pressure gig...well, let's just say Macht can expect to become the subject of some intense speculation for the next little while.

It should go without saying that Miller's involvement works decidedly in Macht's favor -- this is a guy who came to film from the comics, after all, and one who holds a deep reverence for the character. He's gone on record as saying the film will be extremely faithful; he'll be using the same digital background technology utilized for Sin City and 300, and as with Sin City, he'll be using specific panels from the comics to create shots for the movie. And speaking of Sin City, the article notes that Miller will be completing work on Sin City 2 before he gets rolling on The Spirit.

Bad move. Thye shoul've gone with a NAME, peo-ple. Here's my theory. Superman, everyone knows him, so the actor didn't matter, in fact casting an unknown worked because a recognizable actor might have taken the mystique away from the character. But The SPirit? No one knows that character except really old people, I'm guessing. So a NAME actor would sell it to the public. The Spirit, whos that? But say Keanu as the Spirit and [people might say "cool ill check it out!" Not that I think Keanu should play the spirit, but thats my theory. And its just a THEORY, peo-ple so dont get all mad. Discuss.

How many people knew about 300? If Miller can somehow make this project as stylized as Sin City or 300 it doesn't matter if they have big actors.

On IMDB, It states that Miller will finish with Sin City 2 before moving on with Spirit and then after that, Sin City 3.

I was checking out the 300 DVD special features and Frank asked Zach how he was going to pull of Watchmen. HAHA. Made my day.

A fine observation. I've just added a photo of Macht that we took at last year's Toronto Film Festival, where he walked the Last Kiss red carpet with his wife, Jacinda Barrett.

all i hope is if sam "mother fu$%$^$^n" jackson gets the role of the octupus. now, sam,

as the uber comic fan, gets to show everyone his fanboy chops as hopefully nick fury in

iron man and as the villianious octupus. of course for some he might as well be playing

two bad guys because as everyone knows nick fury is one of the biggest *******s this

side of j. jonah jameson. still, i can't wait for this movie and lets hope this guy

doesn't mess it up.

The premise of 300 and some clever previews sold 300 to the audience. I'm still a little disappointed in the execution of said story, but that's in the past so I digress.

If you're mad about this it's Frank Miller you should blame. The guy cares nothing about how much money his projects make as long as he's satisfied with them. Sure this way of thinking results in some strange results sometimes (like his infamous "God damn Batman" line in All-Star Batman), but more often it makes the projects crazy and entertaining, so I'm game for letting Miller do whatever the hell he wants. Miller wanted to make a Spirit movie because Will Eisner was one of his mentors, so he's doing The Spirit they way Eisner would have wanted.

I think this is a good choice. Why don't they get any top notch actors or actresses to play in these graphic novels.

I just also realized that Gabriel Macht is in another graphic novel adaptation: Greg Rucka's Whiteout.

am i the only one who prefers story to visuals (300), or had Idiocracy's prophecy came true? 1 story board inspired visuals is enough for a decade.

Gabriel Macht is not well known, and I've never understood why not.As far as acting talent I find him quite good,as good as any big name.Perhaps all he needs his something great to showcase his talent and a better agent. There was some reason he impressed Miller.I've read that his audtition was impressive.Perhaps we can expect a better performance because he is not well known.
