Unfortunately, he's not fond of children, and convinces his new wife to leave Jeanne with her Belgian nurse, Marie. She does, but finds herself dogged by guilt, and years later returns to retrieve her daughter. Marie is determined not to lose her beloved Jeanne, and tells the mother that her daughter is dead, but things change with the outbreak of WWII. Marie sends Jeanne to live in the US with her mother for her own safety. But upon arrival Jeanne is cowed by the massive estate and unfamiliar wealth she encounters, and goes to work as a maid for her mother's family.
