Julie Walters stars as Bernie McPhelimy, a mother of four who moves to Andersonstown, West Belfast in 1972. As soon as they arrive, the war between the IRA and the British government lands in their front yard. When a freak bullet kills one of Bernie's closest friends, she begins speaking out against both the British Army, as well as the IRA, sparking controversy amongst the local citizens. Before she knows it, she's become a media sensation, and is meeting with high-ranking British officials to recommend a ceasefire. All is not well at home, however. Her husband, Aidan (Ciara Hinds), has an ulcer that sends him to the hospital regularly, her sons are the target of angry bullies at school, and her sixteen-year-old daughter Annie (Nuala O'Neill) has fallen in love for the first time with Dino (Ciaran McMenamin), a medical student. When Bernie realizes that her actions have begun to threaten her family's welfare, she does what is necessary to protect them. Director Roger Michell brings Mary Costello's autobiographical novel to life with this sensitive, humorous, and compassionate portrait of an innocent woman who became an unexpected spokesperson for peace at a time when it was most needed. Reviews for Titanic Town
Titanic Town has a few too many quiet moments, most of which go nowhere in particular.
Conveys the complexity of "The Troubles" in Northern Ireland and the bravery of one woman who tries to make a stand for peace.
