In this animated French film, a boy named Champion trains relentlessly for the Tour de France, with the help of his loyal grandmother and overweight dog, Bruno (who loves to bark at passing trains). When the big race comes, Champion and a few of his fellow racers are kidnapped by some box-shouldered thugs who spirit them off to Belleville (a surreal impression of 1930s-1950s Manhattan) where they are forced to pedal as part of a clandestine gambling operation. Bruno and Grandma set out across the sea in a paddle boat to rescue their boy, but once ashore they soon become lost, hungry and penniless--that is, until the frog-eating Triplets of Belleville, former scat-singing jazz prodigies turned experimental musicians, come to their rescue. Filled with inspired, twisted imagery, this nearly dialogue-free film is a crowd-pleaser of unusual power, with the strange, measured pacing of a dream, and a great soundtrack of bizarre, alternate-reality '30s jazz. It also offers a touching and believable evocation of a dog's life. A great throwback to the time before animation became dominated by CGI effects, TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE is a very strange, very loving, and very French salute to obsession, affection, and persistence. Un beau, wildy amusement et un film original ! See this immediately- read on->
Zee French, zay are different, non? Well, in this case, wonderfully so.
Its strange vacillation between the hopeful and the arbitrarily cold is still a mystery to me... It's not a great film, but then again, it is.
Words cannot replicate the world that Chomet has designed here; description is pointless, as Belleville simply must be experienced firsthand.
Exploring imagery’s universal potential, the movie reaches artistic heights by allowing us to recognize ourselves in people and customs that initially seem brazenly foreign.
Chomet's charming, visually cluttered realm...is so imaginative and vividly realized you could freeze any frame and spend an hour picking through its details.
an almost impossibly delectable mixture of uncanny weirdness and poignant sweetness
An extraordinary, melancholy ode to the endless, mercurial peculiarity of life.
One of his greatest achievements is allowing the audience to crawl inside Bruno's head. Not since "Babe" has a movie made me care so much for a four-legged character.
Let the movie wash over you, and, at the very least, it will cleanse your palate.
Animation was invented so that movies like The Triplets of Belleville could be made.
Thanks to Chomet, 'beautifully strange' has a new home address, and it's in Belleville.
...might be the French counterpart of a Jerry Lewis movie. For the few that will love it, as many more will be baffled three times over.
