by Jen Yamato | November 17, 2008
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Summary

The summer's biggest oohs and ahhs (and guffaws) hit DVD this week, as Wall-E and Tropic Thunder hit shelves with tons of bonus content for fans. Cineastes will be rewarded by the latest from Harmony Korine (Mister Lonely) and David Lynch (the multi-film Lime Green set), while early gift hunters should check out a 300 Limited Collector's Edition and Columbia's massive Best Pictures set. Tropic Thunder wil be my brother's Christmas gift (with Con Air).

I will probably get Wall-E.

All on DVD, unfortunately. As a university student who only recently left home, I don't have enough money to switch on Blu-Ray yet. (Not to mention that I would have to buy a Hd-Tv to go with it.)

Wall-E was probably the second best movie all year behind The Dark Knight. It was incredible. I'll definitely get it sooner or later. Tropic Thunder was great too, so I'll be getting that.

Doctor Who for christmas.......excellent.
Sad about Tennant. Probably became my favourite with Tom Baker right behind.Probably rent Tropic Thunder, mostly for Downeys performance, but I could end up liking it as whole.
So it'd be a neat surprise. Not a big fan of Stiller or Black.

Con Air for your brother? That's cruel. Just kidding. Pearl Harbor really does suck, and is worth a few good laughs. But I'm here to talk about this weeks movies.

"Tropic Thunder" is a film I've yet to see. My Mom is kinda squeamish on the hard R films like this, but I don't mind heavy language, violence, etc. I'd see this, when I'm old enough. (Damn you MPAA!) Why? Because I'm a huge Frat Pack fan (Zoolander/ Meet the Parents/ Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy/ etc.) and this is their highest rated film on the tomameter. So it should be good. I'm surprised the blackface didn't recieve more controversy, and glad for that matter. "What do you mean you people?" "What do YOU mean you people?" "Huh?" I'll see it, in a few years.

reavus is right, "WALL-E" is the second best film of year behind "The Dark Knight", and I'm glad I saw it in theaters. (I'll do my favorite films on January 1st.) I plan buying "WALL-E" eventually, and I can't help to notice how "The Incredibles" (overated, and I know I' gonna get critized for that) ishigher rated than "WALL-E". A true crime, agree.

Definitely Picking up Tropic Thunder this week, but unfortunately i will have to wait for Wall-E, i promise though eventually i'll get it. Southland Tales on Blu-Ray would be awesome but unfortunately i don't have a player lol. I kind of want 300 but i never watch the 2-disc version i have so, i probably won't get it. Finally, Executive Koala looks amazing, i don't have a clue what it is but i kind of want to see it lol.

Southland Tales, is crazy Ledaw, it's by Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko) it's interesting but hard to follow i thought, the blu-ray would be worth it just to be able to read the graphic novels, because i'm thinking they will shed more light on everything. Don't knock the JT scene yet though, it's actually pretty awesome.

You've seen Lynch's Elephant Man and Gandhi, but you're not old enough to see Tropic Thunder? Just curious. You're obviously smart and have great taste in reading material :)

I listen to the podcast every week. Jen, I consider you a friend and I am warning you not to go on that show. Adam and Devindra are going to rip u apart, I know you can take care of your self but they even talked about tonight how they want to have TWILIGHT fans on just to yell at them. I know you hold your own and I wish you luck, I will be posting on that board under "drchicago" so I'll be there to try to get your back even though you are a TWILIGHTER.

I'm definitely buying WALL-E eventually. That movie, along with TDK, is the year's insta-classic. I'm a huge fan of animation (specifically old school Disney toons, Looney Tunes, the old Tom and Jerry shorts, and of course Pixar's toons. I'm eagerly awaiting WALL-E and Toy Story 3.

WALL-E is the best reviewed and BEST film of the year, well before The Dark Knight, which was fun but overrated. If only there was more to it than Heath Ledger's (excellent) Joker stilling the show, it might've been at least tied. Everyone should pick up WALL-E ASAP as the 3-Disc Edition is a limited edition.

Jen- I thought you'd notice. I knew my taste was different from my peers when I mentioned Indiana Jones to my friend (former friend) and he said "Who's Indiana Jones?" I've always loved movies of all kind, from Charlie Chaplin to the Frat Pack, Humphery Bogart to Monty Python. I'm not answering how old I am (sorry) but thank you for the complimet on my taste. As a matter of fact, I probaly enjoyed WALL-E more than most because I felt it was the perfect homage to Chaplin. As far as video games go, my friends play Halo and Madden, while I still play Mario and Animal Crossing. And lastly, it was Mario's creator (and the creator of Zelda) birthday recently. His name is like Shigeaure Miyamoto. (I may have spelled it wrong.)

So thanks for the complimet Jen, I just think it's sad kids today only knnow of the Star Wars prequels, instead of the orginals. Or know of National Treasure instead the Indiana Jones series. Or think Dane Cooks funny, instead of the Python's. Oh well, now I sound old.

Iron Man will probably make my Top Ten this year. I liked it. I liked RDJ and Jeff Bridges. I liked the fun, free-wheeling feel of the movie but I felt, at times, that it could have been less dumb and could have omitted the stupidly cute little robot claw thing that helped him out.

I also thought the climax was kinda dull. A couple of big, clunky guys in robot suits throwing each other around and Iron Man beating him by launching him into space. Ho-hum.

And they quickly flew right into the Avengers mythology, didn't they?

Needed to be a bit bigger.

But still good.

But still great, you mean. I loved Iron Man, and man do I regret missing it in theaters. I read the comics, (orginal Stan Lee one's) and the only small small problem is I wish there were more Happy Hogan. Anyone agree? I suppose it can be fixed in the sequel. My final score is 10/10.

Haven't seen many of the movies on your list, but I've only seen 6 films so far, (a few minutes ago I finished "The Incredible Hulk", and I like it.) I've yet to see a film I don't like this year. But with only six under my belt, that makes sense. I only saw 4 films in theaters ( I'll see double of that next year) and two on DVD. I'm not ranking my faves til' the end of the year. taboscoman77, how would you score your top ten? ( I give all six a perfect 10/10.)

I have yet to see Hulk. I will, eventually. Hope it's good. I liked the first one. I'm in the minority there, I know. I have heard the second one is just as good.

I usually do it by which I liked more than the other. I think the only movie on the list that's 10/10 for me was Wall-E. Redbelt and TDK get 9. BAF gets an 8 as does QoS, Miss Pettigrew. X-Files and VCB get 7, along with Iron Man and Indy.

I think I have come to the conclusion that you have to have a 7 or higher to get on the list. :)

It's not a sequel. It's a reboot, like Batman Begins. And the new one is better. Not as good, but since you liked the other you're opinion may be different. "Okay" list.

Sorry, a "reboot".

I really liked the first Hulk. It really got into the whole psyche of Banner, I thought. Beautifully filmed, too.

My list is subject to change, as I said. There are many movies that I have yet to watch and a few that have not come out yet.
