Synopsis: When inexperienced call girl Alabama Whitman (Patricia Arquette) is paid to seduce comic-book-nerd and Elvis fanatic Clarence Worley (Christian Slater), she doesn't expect to fall for him. But... When inexperienced call girl Alabama Whitman (Patricia Arquette) is paid to seduce comic-book-nerd and Elvis fanatic Clarence Worley (Christian Slater), she doesn't expect to fall for him. But these two lost souls seem to be made for each other and quickly pledge their love, marrying at Detroit's city hall. Clarence discovers some newfound bravado and attempts to retrieve Alabama's possessions from her pimp, Drexl (Gary Oldman), who isn't exactly eager to let Alabama go. Fleeing Drexl's apartment, Clarence not only leaves a trail of bodies, but also inadvertently mistakes a suitcase of uncut cocaine for one with his wife's clothing, and the chase is on. The unlikely newlyweds head for Los Angeles hoping to sell the cocaine and make enough money to leave the country. Unfortunately, they also have to contend with the mob, yuppie drug dealers and the police. Michael Rapaport is amusing as Clarence's best friend who lives with Floyd, a stoner played by Brad Pitt. A sedate Dennis Hopper appears as Clarence's father, who ultimately faces off with mob boss Vincenzo Coccotti (Christopher Walken). Director Tony Scott (CRIMSON TIDE, ENEMY OF THE STATE) does justice to the violence and quirkiness of Quentin Tarantino's second feature film script. [More]

The movie is exciting, thanks to the script, but when it comes to the bullet-ridden showdown, Scott shows it in fast cuts, without giving us a perspective of the action or the space. It's ruined.

If the romance seldom seems 'true', the spiralling violence (script, Quentin Tarantino) does succeed, in a brutish, cod-Jacobean kind of way.

True Romance, despite not displaying Tarantino at his best, is still a Tarantino film and it delivers the goods to all those who expect some stylish entertainment.

Despite Tony Scott's occasional blundering, True Romance is still a visceral roller coaster.

A hall of fame guy's movie...[with] a macho '90s ensemble eclipsed only by Glengarry Glen Ross...the monologues--oh, the monologues! [Blu-ray]

If shoot-'em-up, gobble-'em-down movies like The Fugitive and Jurassic Park are rated PG-13 these days, what does an R-rated action adventure look like? Like True Romance: violent to a fault, glam to the max.

Bombards the audience with images of blazing guns, brutal beatings, and lots of gushing blood while telling a twisted and entertaining tale.

Made with such energy, such high spirits, such an enchanting goofiness, that it's impossible to resist.

It plays out like candied noir, with a classic dialogue scene at least once every ten minutes.

The movie may be stylistically visceral, but it's aesthetically corrupt. It might as well have been called Pump Up the Violence.

If you're in the mood for this sort of absurd, violent nonsense ... True Romance does deliver.

Too often the bloodbath mentality simply washes away the film's more appealing elements.

An instant cult classic. Not only is it self-referential, stylish and exciting, it’s also better written than most genre films, with plenty of memorable dialogue, compelling characters and yes, true romance.

Based on an early script from Tarantino, Tony Scott's wild movie is amour fou for youth of the 1990s, a gutsy, violent, often exciting picture likely to divide film critics.

This film's various outrages are committed unapologetically, and are very much in the service of its bizarre story.

...a chase picture, a gangster picture, and a wacky, turbulent romance...sort of a Bonnie and Clyde on speed.

The pacing is frantic, and the character interplay generally engaging. Perhaps the problem is that when it's all over, I'm not quite sure whether there was a point beyond a lot of sound and fury signifying nothing.
