With a son in prison... Ulee, a Florida beekeeper, must struggle not only to earn a living, but to keep his two grandchildren from falling into the same self-destructive paths blazed by their parents. With a son in prison and the children's mother having long abandoned the family, he has his work cut out for him. But when he receives news that his daughter-in-law has been found, drugged out and hitting rock bottom, he dutifully shoulders the burden--only to find that in so doing, he has unwittingly opened the door to the world's dark side which he had tried so desperately to keep closed. Fonda won a Golden Globe as Best Actor for his turn as the Zen-like patriarch. Academy Award Nomination: Best Actor--Peter Fonda. [More]

Reviews for Ulee's Gold
Deceptively old-fashioned, this is an emotionally quiet but rewarding portrait of a taciturn beekeeper (marvelously played by Peter Fonda, who resembles his dad) forced to emerged out of his solitary, sheltered life and face his family responsibilities
Peter Fonda's portrayal of Florida beekeeper Ulee Jackson is a masterpiece of restraint, confident and finely etched, understated yet always in control.
The acting styles are well-matched with Nunez's slow, deliberate direction.
Works well as a realistic look at a family in need of a second chance on life.
Nunez manages to pull it together with such grace that you forgive his handful of out-of-focus shots.
One of those unexpected pleasures that combines a low budget with a high emotional impact.
