Pixar's Up Inspired by Don Quixote?
The Man from La Mancha going CGI?
by Jeff Giles | December 26, 2007
Discuss Article
Pixar has already spun animated gold out of everything from toys to cars, and with next year's WALL-E, the studio seems poised to do the same for lonely spacebound robots. For one of its next acts, could Pixar be preparing a retelling of Don Quixote?

That's the question asked by Upcoming Pixar, where a Wikipedia entry describing the studio's summer 2009 release, Up, has led to the early speculation. The entry quotes from a TIME article which identifies Pete Docter and Bob Peterson as the feature's co-directors, and summarizes the storyline as follows:

"[A] coming-of-old-age story" about a seventy-something guy who lives in a house that "looks like your grandparents' house smelled." He befriends a clueless young Wilderness Ranger and gets into lots of altercations. Says Pixar: "Our hero travels the globe, fights beasts and villains and eats dinner at 3:30 in the afternoon."

Older gentleman, sidekick, nutty adventures...yep, sounds like Don Quixote. It's all conjecture, of course, but a Pixar take on Cervantes' classic book would have a lot of potential, no? Maybe they can get Terry Gilliam involved in some capacity.

Does he attack any windmills? Also, isn't a Don Quixote production cursed or something? Just watch "Lost in La Mancha" to see evidence.

That's better than the retelling they did of "Doc Hollywood" with the movie "Cars".

1. It's called Up. It's obviously going to be a remake of the Russ Meyer film of the same name.

2. After Tideland, I don't want Terry Gilliam to ever have anything to do with movies again.

I hope the old guy is/looks like the old man from the short that ran before A Bugs Life.

This is pretty much old news. This article has been up forever, why are they just writing about it? I'm scared for this movie. If they would just call this Incredibles 2: Superold Edition I might be at ease.

If they get Gilliam involved the studio will be hit by a meteor.

If it was a remake of the 1976 russ meyers film...i'd say pixar would be making a very bold choice based on their target audience...

As whacky as it sounds, i can say i can trust Pixar, as they only made 1 bad movie so far (cars). I'd say Incredibles 2, but i don't think that will be coming anytime soon. :(

I found a source with a lot of good background on Don Quixote - including, interestingly, a link to an article that suggests that Buzz & Woody are modeled after Don Quixote and Sancho Panza (as are Calvin & Hobbes and a slew of other dynamic duos). So if Up does follow the Don Quixote story line, it will be in good company.
