Synopsis: Frank Meadows is a respectable, middle-aged civil servant in 1950s Britain who has been in love with Johnny, a young, married working-class man, for years. Unable to pursue an open relationship... Frank Meadows is a respectable, middle-aged civil servant in 1950s Britain who has been in love with Johnny, a young, married working-class man, for years. Unable to pursue an open relationship with Johnny, Frank must tolerate Johnny's shrewish wife and ever-increasing number of children in order to maintain contact with the object of his desire. When Johnny is sent to prison for petty theft, Frank assumes care of Johnny's cherished German shepherd Evie, eventually channeling his frustrated love for Johnny into an overweening affection for the man's dog.
