Critics Consensus: No To Yes Man; Seven Pounds Is Too Heavy
Plus, The Tale of Despereaux is so-so, while The Wrestler electrifies.

Discuss Article

This week at the movies, we've got self-improvement (Yes Man, starring Jim Carrey and Zooey Deschanel), mysterious altruism (Seven Pounds, starring Will Smith and Rosario Dawson), and rodent adventures (The Tale of Despereaux, with voice work by Matthew Broderick and Dustin Hoffman). What do the critics have to say?

After a disastrous detour to dramatic territory with The Number 23, Jim Carrey is back to the realm of wacky comedy. Unfortunately, critics say his return is only sporadically successful in Yes Man. Carrey plays Carl, a man gripped by depression who enters a self-help program that encourages its devotees to say yes to each and every question. However, Carl finds answering in the affirmative can sometimes have negative consequences. The pundits say the film has its moments, thanks to Carrey's manic energy, but it's ultimately little more than a series of comedic set-pieces that don't build or cohere; worse, we've already seen Carrey do a pretty fine variation on this theme in Liar Liar. At 40 percent on the Tomatometer, you may want to say "no" to Yes Man. (Check out this week's Total Recall, in which we count down Carrey's best-reviewed films.)

"What's it called? Gallipoli? Sounds hilarious!"

It's unsurprising that Will Smith would want to shed his blockbuster baggage every once in a while and throw himself into a smaller, more dramatically weighty role; unfortunately, critics say his latest, Seven Pounds, is more leaden than anything else. Smith stars as Ben, an IRS agent haunted by past misdeeds. As a way of making amends, he decides to practice random acts of kindness on strangers, a plan that goes in intriguing directions when he falls in love with terminally-ill Emily (Rosario Dawson). Some pundits have given Smith credit for attempting riskier material, but they also say Seven Pounds doesn't follow the rules of logic very closely, and its tone is somber and portentous. At 35 percent on the Tomatometer, Seven Pounds may not be worth your 10 dollars.

"I'm really sorry that I said girls ain't nothin' but trouble."

Another week, another so-so animated feature. The Tale of Despereaux is a fantasy tale about a heroic little mouse who becomes an outcast for refusing to conform; he befriends a group of rats, with whom he shares a journey of self-discovery and adventure. The pundits say Despereaux looks pretty good, and is mercifully free of the toilet humor and pop culture references that have become commonplace in animated features. However, it's also lacking a sense of magic, and doesn't really take dramatic flight. At 42 percent on the Tomatometer, this mouse is a tail's-length behind Ratatouille.

"Man, it's taking forever to read this book!""

Also opening this week in limited release:

  • Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler, starring an electrifying Mickey Rourke as a former ring king on the comeback trail, is at 97 percent.

  • The Class, the 2008 Palme D'or winner at Cannes, which follows a teacher during a tumultuous year in an inner-city Parisian high school, is at 96 percent.

  • Scott Walker: 30 Century Man, a documentary about the reclusive crooner and cult favorite, is at 88 percent.

  • Nothing But the Truth, starring Kate Beckinsale and Matt Dillon in the story of a journalist who goes to prison to avoid revealing her source on an explosive story, is at 73 percent.

Recent Jim Carrey Movies:

  • 79% -- Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who! (2008)
  • 8% -- The Number 23 (2007)
  • 29% -- Fun With Dick and Jane (2005)
  • 70% -- Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004)
  • 94% -- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

Perhaps Smith's streak will come to an end.

Probably not.

"Seven Pounds" is a ripoff of "Pursuit of Happiness", and a sequel to "Hancock".

"Yes Man" looks severely unfunny. Still, it will be better than "The Number 23", but not as funny.

"Tale of Despereaux" dosen't look bad, just not good. Dissapointing sums it up, and it sums up this week in films my fellow movie dissapointeys. (?)

Would you consider Will Smith an artist?

I cannot suspend my disbelief of many if not all of Mr. Smith's movies. I am very upset at the portrayal of Robert Neville. The lack of depth found in that character alone is enough to motivate protest.

On the other hand - I am happy that Mr. Smith's movie generate revenue. That revenue hopefully will trickle down and allow the green lighting of well developed, and produced pictures.

Mr. Smith - I am not a fan.

One reviewer described it as "Seven Pounds of Cheese". I saw it and it's more like "Seven Pounds of Sh*t", trust me.

I saw Seven Pounds as well...it's quite bad. Definitely among the worse I've seen Will Smith in. It will probably piss you off it's so bad actually.

So, it's No to Seven Pounds, Yes Man, and Desparaux. It's Yes to Wrestler.
Wow, bad couple of weeks. But we have Button next week, so that's an upside. But we also have the Spirit, which is getting some terrible reviews.
Huhhhh. If I go see anything this week, it be Yes Man. I thought it was going to get in the teens, but it was in the thirtys. That suprised me.

LOL yeah Number 23 was pretty funny, Yes Man is a definite rental. Also I still think WIll Smith is over rated and can't do too much outside the realm of popcorn fluff (yes I liked Ali but still). I am going to do my best to see Frost/Nixon this weekend before I have to leave town. I recommend DOUBT and Synchdoce, New York if you guys haven't seem them then you should. Also I just saw THE FALL, man that is underrated I actually really liked it despite its flaws.

Seven pounds looks so stupid. I feel stupid. What is it even supposed to be about. The plot just looks so lame. A man goes around trying to change a persons life? Stupid lame blah!

P.S i just saw Terminator 2 again on AMC Yesterday. What an awesome movie.

Yeah T2 is awesome. Mostly becau- ...

Why are we talking about this? Oh, yeah because everything else this week is lame. I don't think "Seven Pounds" looks bad, just average. And I'm still confused, how did Hancock lose his powers?

By the way, "The Wrestler" dosen't look very good to me. As a matter of fact it looks like the worst film this week. It looks so hokey, and cliched, and depressing. They should do it again as a comedy with Seth Rogen. Yeah, that's as far as my intellect spans.

I went to see Mr. Smith's latest and I liked it mostly. It was emotional. They could of dropped the narration - as always they didn't need it - but I liked the way the filmmakers released information. The fact that there was no spoon-feeding moments full of exposition was appreciated. I liked how all this super heavy drama was hinged on something relatively small but common, and unfortunately not illegal.

'The Fall' is a brilliant film. I bought the DVD sight-unseen after seeing just the trailer online. I knew it was going to be a visually brilliant film after seeing what Tarsem did in 'The Cell' (which people can say anything they want about but must concede it's very original from a visual standpoint).

This Christmas, Hollywood is Scrooge, giving us all lumps of coal in our stockings... The worst part is, they still pretend they're giving us shiny new bikes. It's just like Microsoft selling everyone Xbox 360s that they knew for a fact were defective...

I agree Smith is overrated, the only thing I like with him on it is I am Legend, thats how good that movie is,it made Smith bearable. Carrey is done also, he's not funny anymore and as a serious actor doesn't work either, Eternal Sunshine is good but Carrey can't really act.

He was pretty good in Man on The Moon too, I love Eternal Sunshine! I do wish he would try more serious stuff. I would love to see him come out with another comedy classic someday. I still like Carey, but this will be a definite rental.

Random_Jake, is that an excuse? Because they still owe me $200.00. It was one of the first game stations I played not made by Nintendo, and probaly my last. Oh wait, this isn't IGN, this is Rotten Tomatoes.

Like I said. "Wrestler" looks bad, "Seven Pounds" looks average (although my Mom just saw it and really liked it), "Despereaux" looks average as well.

So "Yes Man" looks awful, I mean come on! He says yes to everything, how can that last more than 10 minutes! Ooohh, he had a lot of Red Bulls, (sarcastically) how hilarious, how utterly, utterly, hilarious.

I saw Yes Man on Friday. I wasn't bad, but certainly not funny as hell. I must say I rank it below A series of Unfortunate Event.

And is it me, or does Jim Carrey looks old in this one. I mean, I know he is older nowadays, but in this movie, it shows.

The Red Bull part was the funniest part. Rubber-Face Carrey was back - for thirty seconds.
