As a naive German princess she is brought to St. Petersburg in order to marry Peter III -- sickly heir to the throne of the vast Russian empire. Young Catherine quickly involves herself in the intrigues of court life, and over time grows exceedingly powerful with the aid of her lover, the ambitious courtier Grigory Orlov.
