The film begins in heaven, with Ziegfeld imagining what one final, grand revue would look like. A series of musical and comedy sketches follow, each featuring MGM's top stars. There's an opulent water ballet sequence starring Esther Williams, dances featuring Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, a comedy sketch with Red Skelton as a drunk television announcer, and much more. "Ziegfeld Follies" has something to entertain everyone. [More]

Reviews for Ziegfeld Follies
Though not one of Minnelli (or MGM's) best musicals, this pastice is worth seeing for the dancing of Astarire and Kelly (the first and only time in history), Fanny Brice's shtick, and Judy Garland in a wonderfully satiric impersonation of Greer Garson
...an elaborate showcase for the exceptional musical and comedy talents of MGM's biggest stars, with no messy story line or characterizations getting in the way.
Some of the performances are standouts, but just as many are utter duds.
Technically it's magnificent overkill, from Minnelli's swooping crane shots to the turning, floating 'Hello Dali!' carnival-wedding-cake scenic design to the intense Technicolor that burned holes in retinas.
