Photo Gallery Update Bonanza! "Ghost Rider," "Black Snake Moan," "300" and More!
by RT Staff | February 06, 2007
Discuss Article
We've got pics from the biggest upcoming flicks in updated galleries for "Ghost Rider," "Black Snake Moan," "Dead Silence," "Zodiac," and this spring's highly anticipated swords-and-sandals battlefest, "300!" **UPDATE: New "300" Stills Just Added!

Nicolas Cage's "Ghost Rider" starts things off next week with what's arguably the first of the high-anticipation releases of the coming months. Will his CGI-created fireball head please die-hard fans of the comic (and of the genre)? Will "Ghost Rider" complete or defy the recent comic book adaptation trifecta of writer/director Mark Steven Johnson, whose last two scripting gigs were "Daredevil" (2003) and "Elektra" (2005)?

"Ghost Rider" follows stuntman hero Johnny Blaze (Cage) as he sells his soul to the devil, battles the evil demon Blackheart (Wes Bentley), and romances reporter Roxanne Simpson (Eva Mendes). Also look forward to supporting roles by Peter Fonda and Sam Elliott. The pic is released February 16.

A week later comes the blues-fueled morality tale "Black Snake Moan," from "Hustle & Flow" helmer Craig Brewer. With the inimitable Samuel L. Jackson as a troubled former musician and the tempestuous Christina Ricci as a sex-crazed local gal, "Moan"'s looking like a serio-comic, pulp-tinged ride; it's got a great soundtrack to boot.

"Black Snake Moan" hits theaters February 23; check out the trailer here for a taste of the flick (and a scantily clad Ricci). Remember, it's hard out here for a nymph!

For a slight change of pace, check out the based-on-a-true-story crime pic, "Zodiac," starring Robert Downey Jr., Jake Gyllenhaal, and Mark Ruffalo. Set in 1970s San Francisco, "Zodiac" recounts the true tale of a serial killer that terrorized the state and taunted police; Gyllenhaal plays Robert Graysmith, the real-life newspaper cartoonist who became obsessed with the killer's cyphers and whose subsequent books on the crimes were adapted for the film.

Another reason for putting "Zodiac" on your must-watch list? It's directed by David Fincher, whose "Seven" (1995) and "Fight Club" (1999) are by now veritable classics. "Zodiac" is released March 2.

But if you're waiting for an epic, action-filled bloodbath, March 9 is your day. Frank Miller's "300," starring Gerard Butler as the doomed leader of Sparta in 480 B.C., is entirely shot against a green screen -- resulting in potentially the most beautiful, painterly-like backdrops known to cinema.

Well, ok, there's no telling just how fantastic it will be, but judging from the trailer (watch it here), "300" is going to deliver. Zack Snyder ("Dawn of the Dead") is at the helm, and he's got Frank Miller's blessing. "300" comes out March 9.

**We know you love your "300" pics, so we added over 40 more stills, concept art, and behind-the-scenes photos to the gallery today!!

If previews mean anything, both Ghost Rider and 300 may be disappointing. Ghost Rider looks cheap and cheesy and 300 looks like a combined rip-off of Gladiator, Braveheart and LOTR's. Zodiac looks promising though.

I'll agree with you somewhat on GR, I'm planning on seeing it but I'm not going in with high expectations. However 300 looks freaking awesome. I've yet to see anything about it that doesn't get me excited.

I don't care what anybody says, Daredevil was a pretty good movie- especially the director's cut.

I don't know if it's a rip-off, but it's definitely over-hyped. (That's temperance if you're from anywhere).

Impressions . . .

GHOST RIDER: Looks like it's made-for-TV. Constrained sets. Over-the-top costumes. Cardboard characters that are little more than 'pale' archetypes. Nic Cage always seemed like a terrible casting choice(he was good for roles in Adaptation and Lord of War, though . . . but just not this). It's too focused on Eva's butt to make her a real character. Strictly for teens.

BLACK SNAKE MOAN: My big question is--- Who is the target audience????? It seems like one factor or another regarding this story manages to cancel out the interest of potential viewers. However, it does look like good tongue-in-cheek fun, a genre revival that echoes Tarantino's aim with the Kill Bill flicks. Just expect modest box office.

ZODIAC: It has a hearty concept, a good director, and an inspired crop of performers. I'm not expecting it to be great . . . but I can't imagine it being less than "good". With Fincher at the helm, surprises are sure to abound. I'm looking forward to it. With a dearth of decent flicks this early-year, it'll probably be the first actual '07 film that I see.

300: I read the Graphic Novel and thought it was terrible; weak art and juvenile writing abound. This, despite Miller's solid work with the Sin City novels. So now pops the movie. It looks pretty, but seems very, very stupid. Afficionados of solid storytelling and smart writing probably won't find much here. One's enjoyment will likely be dependent on how much stock he puts in story vs. imagery/effects. If Zack Snyder brings the same wit, pacing and design to this film that he brought to the first fifteen minutes of Dawn of the Dead, then things might get interesting. If one can ignore its gaping issues, then 300 should still be a fun ride.

I'm with Dracus on 300. The bearded leader giving his "Not going to die this day" speech to inspire the men, straight out of Gladiator, Braveheart and Return of the King. The lonely wife sitting in the flowing wheat field, longing for her warrior to return from battle we saw that in Gladiator and the overall LOTR's CGI look. Yeah, while it may be good, it looks way too familiar to me.

Yes, but there are certain tropes you just expect in this kind of movie, and the two you mentioned are two of them. I would imagine there may have been several morale-boosting speeches at the real Sparta. Will the story be great? Probably not, but I'll be there to see all the tight-abbed, scantily-clad menbeating the hell out of each other :-)

The imagery in 300 is amazing. I'm still hope the story-telling is good. Anyway, I can't wait to watch and find out.
