Pogue Pens Remake of a French Fright Flick
by Scott Weinberg | July 11, 2005
Discuss Article
Screenwriter John Pogue has sold his pitch for a remake of the 2002 French horror film "Malefique" to Paramount, says Variety. Producer Neal Moritz ("Stealth") will be overseeing the project. Based on a somewhat obscure original film, "Malefique" is about...

..."an eclectic group of four inmates sharing one prison cell. When they find a book of occult spells, they try to use its shaky magic to escape, but things don't go as planned."

Mr. Pogue's previous screenplays include "The Skulls," "Rollerball," "Ghost Ship," and "U.S. Marshals."

Could be decent. At least the French horror flick they're remaking isn't HIGH TENSION. Now that would bother me.

But this one being remade by the writer of THE SKULLS, GHOST SHIP, and ROLLERBALL worries me. Oh well, it doesn't sound amazing to begin with so I wouldn't be truly upset if it ends up a mess.

High Tension is extremely underrated. 3/4 of the bad reviews it got were because the moron critic would forget that the whole movie is the version of events a psycho is telling, and the other quarter is because they do not like gore. There's no denying that the scene in the farm is far better in chills than all the PG-13 horror movies full of cheap goosebumps that have been flooding cinemas recently. Last but not least, do yourselves a favour and see the original Dark Water. Haven't seen the American remake yet but hopefully there's still something of the Japanese version in there yet.

I don't think this movie will be good.

If you don't want French people to get angry at you, please don't remake their films!

What's annoying is how it seemed so few of the people who reviewed it actually WATCHED the film. Ebert said "the main character wanders off into a cornfield for no reason other than she's goofy." Umm, how could you say that and have actually been paying attention to it? Did he miss the part where her friend went in there and then after her friend didn't come back she went in there to look for her? And then Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly said it was a Texas Chainsaw rip-off when it isn't at all (it pays tribute to horror films of the 70's like TCM though, and one scene is an ode to it, but that's it), and the biggest thing is that he said the killer and the gas station attendent are in on it. He couldn't have understood it at all. It was like he didn't even watch the movie.

It's not a mainstream movie and it's not for everyone (it's a horror movie for horror fans, plain and simple), but they didn't seem to even give it a chance from the sound of it. I don't know how they could have been paying attention. They could have at least mentioned things like the amazing cinematography, and there's no way they weren't at least on the edge of their seats during it, even if they don't like the ending.
