Who Needs Carrey When You've Got Carell? Meet "Evan Almighty"
by Scott Weinberg | August 26, 2005
Discuss Article
Variety reports that the suddenly very hot Steve Carell is in negotiations with Universal to star in "Evan Almighty," a sort-of sequel that will see Mr. Carell reprising his role from "Bruce Almighty." Original director Tom Shadyac and screenwriter Steve Oedekerk are already on board, and word is that Morgan Freeman will be stepping back into the role of "God."

"Conceived for Jim Carrey until he declined to reprise his role in "Bruce Almighty," sequel will take the news anchor character Carell played in that film and put him on an Almighty-inspired quest to build an ark in preparation for a great flood."

Universal seems to be moving full steam ahead on this project; production is scheduled to begin early next year.

Wow, looks like an even more uneeded sequal then Mrs. Doubtfire 2 is being made.

Actually, I kinda want to see this. Carrell is hilarious, and I find Oederkerk's humor funny as well.

I've got to agree with the Biggestgeekever. Why on EARTH would you make a sequel to Bruce Almighty? And without Jim Carrey? No way.

I prob would of questioned this sequel since Jim Carrey isint coming back, but Steve Carell is hilarious and should fill in just fine.

He played the news anchor that Jim Carrey's character was jealous of.

And it might just work...

it sounds so stupid and unneeded, that it just might be pretty funny

only if they poke fun at the fact that this movie is stupid and unneeded...that would be worth watching.

What? A Jim Carrey movie sequel without Jim Carrey? Sounds like crap.

I just can't imagine how the plot will work. Does God just love this city and decides that Evan needs to learn a lesson of his own?

Sounds forced... why ? The guy is talented enough and has proved he can carry a movie on his own... why reprising a secondary role (even if he was great in it) for making an unnecesary sequel to a movie that starred an actor that won't be back ?! Just give Carell a brand new project (and hopefully, let him have a hand in the script, like he did for "Virgin"). Oh, yes, and the story of this one sound really lame !

Well I agree 100% with Aoiboy. Steve Carell is incredibly funny, but Bruce Almighty wasn't that good of a movie. It would just be a waste of his talent to make a pointless sequel to an average movie... I can't really picture it being any good.

I agree with the people who claim this to be an unnecessary spinoff to what was a mediocre movie at best. And this is not a sequel as what some guys here claim.. it's more of a spinoff (think Elektra, a spinoff of Daredevil).

Don't you just hate it whenever someone becomes hot property, studio execs just milk them for all they're worth until you can't stand them anymore!? Look at Will Ferrell.. while I appreciate his brand of humor, he has suddenly become so ubiquitous that I'd be surprised if I DON'T see him make in a comedy.

Carrell should take his time in choosing film titles, and not use his newfangled popularity to simply make one film after another..

I liked Bruce Almighty, Shadyac's a good director, Freeman's awsome and Carell's a funny guy. But Carell's still no Jim Carrey and this sounds like it has a stupid plot, so hopefully this unneeded spinoff will fall apart and these talented people will go onto better things.

I think it could go either way. They could make it hilarious or it be a disaster. i say let them make the movie and judge it then.

This movie will probably be okay but I prefer fresh ideas rather than uneeded sequels.

Carell could do great in a movie of his own, not some stupid spinoff with a retarded plot. The original was kind of funny, but really not all that great.
