Jodie's "Plan" -- Be #1 at the Weekend Box Office
Disney's airplane thriller "Flightplan" had little problem snagging the #1 spot at the weekend box office, but for the first time ever, two September releases managed to cross the $20 million mark in same frame. "Flightplan" hauled in an estimated $24.6 million, while Tim Burton's "The Corpse Bride" netted $20.1 million.
Settling in at third place was Reese Witherspoon's rom-com "Just Like Heaven," which made $9.8 million in its second weekend, while newcomer "Roll Bounce" pulled in $8 million from just over 1,800 theaters. (Fox promised to donate ten percent of that tally to Katrina relief.) Still hanging on in fifth place was the horror/drama "The Exorcism of Emily Rose," which added another $7.5 million to its $62 million piggy bank.
Next weekend sees the debut of three new wide releases: Joss Whedon's sci-fi adventure "Serenity," the young-adult underwater thriller "Into the Blue," and the Disney sports drama "The Greatest Game Ever Played."

on Sep 26 2005 12:29 PM Great Movie. Sure it had a few plotholes in it. I thought it was one of the more entertaining movies to come around in a while, better than Red Eye as far as airplane action goes. This one manages to stay on the plane the entire movie and the action for the most part keeps comin. (Reply to this) |

on Sep 26 2005 02:00 PM This disappointment of a combination of both Panic Room and The Forgotten (both Jodie Foster) will be forgotten soon. Corpse Bride is just too creative, funny, and artsy for stupid moviegoers who would rather see some moronic and stale thriller rather than a great and original movie. (Reply to this) |

on Sep 26 2005 04:32 PM In reply to this comment (#826175) That was Julianne Moore in The Forgotten, not Foster. I loved FLightplan, and thought Foster really carried it along. She was one of the reasons I liked Panic Room so much, too (although that movie had a lot of other great attributes). (Reply to this) |
on Sep 26 2005 04:53 PM Expect some turbulance from Flightplan next weekend. Mostly mixed word-of-mouth will probably lead to a drop of near or over 50%. Corpse Bride, however, will be sticking around for some time. Next weekend's drop will be small, especially after a strong Saturday-Sunday hold. Less than 35% is likely, less than 30% is very possible. Great word-of-mouth coming from this one that's really going to carry the film. (Reply to this) |
on Sep 27 2005 03:26 PM In reply to this comment (#826177) Have you seen it yet? It's one of those films that's pretty contrived, but is, nonetheless, a crowd-pleaser. When I saw it at the Toronto Film Festival, people were cheering pretty loudly at the end. That's why I was kinda expecting it to do pretty well. Corpse Bride is pretty good, but with Wallace & Gromit and opening in a couple weeks, it's staying power will be tested. (Reply to this) |
