Get Ready for a Very Zombie "Halloween"

If you love the original "Halloween," but have grown a little weary with the endless sequels, it looks like shock-maker Rob Zombie might have just the answer: He'll be writing and directing an all-new installment in the series (don't call it a sequel!), which will be ready for release in October of 2007.

One of the little guys got there before The Hollywood Reporter did, so let's give fair credit to Bloody-Disgusting.com: "Dimension Films is proud to announce that they will make a new “Halloween” movie with Rob Zombie ("The Devil's Rejects," "House of 1000 Corpses") writing, directing and serving as a producer. Malek Akkad of Trancas International Films ("Halloween H20: 20 Years Later") will produce the feature along with Andy Gould of Vision Entertainment Group ("The Devil's Rejects," "House of 1000 Corpses"). Zombie will also serve as music supervisor on the film. Miramax Films will co-finance the development with Dimension Films. The announcement was made today by The Weinstein Company co-chairman, Bob Weinstein.

Zombie's vision of this film is an entirely new take on the legend and will satisfy fans of the classic "Halloween" legacy while beginning a new chapter in the Michael Myers saga. This new movie will not only appeal to horror fans, but to a wider movie-going audience as well. It will not be a copycat of any prior films in the "Halloween" franchise. The film is set for an October 2007 theatrical release."

UGH... Rob Zombie and PG-13? I highly doubt it. He doesn't seem like the kind of creator who would write lite thrills (see his other movies...) and he probably won't be stingy with the gore. I'm envisioning him taking this series into the Hellraiser direction. And it would be awesome if he brings Jamie Lee Curtis back...

Hellraiser direction? Rob Zombie destroy films. Its all there for the blood and gore but nothing that really resonates the audience. He's very good at frustrating the audience though with cliche loony characters and plot. And you thought SAW was bad.

no, i didnt think SAW(which has nothing to do with Rob Zombie?) was bad, neither was The Devil's Rejects. and no, he won't be making a PG-13 Halloween flick, that's just crazy talk.

...man, i CANT believe some people are mad over this. after the VERY idiotic previous Halloween movie, people should be BEGGING for change in this franchise. with Zombie's dark approach, he just may return some credibility to this franchise. as long as he keeps the main points of the orginal story, this should rock.

Part of the appeal of the first HALLOWEEN was the LACK of gratuitious gore. It was a suspense film, not a slasher film ala FRIDAY THE 13th. I would love to see the HALLOWEEN franchise go in a new direction but to what extent? I don't see Zombie making a "suspense" film after seeing HOUSE OF A 1000 CORPSES and THE DEVIL'S REJECTS. This will be an interesting project to watch.

well, we are assuming it's gonna be full of gore(it most likely will) but that's not a bad thing. but to say Halloween is NOT a slasher film? oh come on now

well the original wasn't so much of a slasher film, since slasher films usually contain over-the-top gore and tons of blood. Halloween had almost no blood at all and used "Jack in the Box" suspense to scare rather than gore. it wasn't until all the copycat movies that came out after that the blood and gore began to become prevalent, and the Halloween movies followed suit to keep up with the trend.

i think a lot of people have it built up in their heads that Halloween was this blood-soaked, gore-filled film when it really wasn't. maybe it's because the sequels that followed were so bloody and gory, or maybe because Halloween was so scary that in retrospect, people add things in their head that weren't there to begin with. but if you go back and watch the original film and then watch Halloween 2, you'll notice that blood is almost non-existent in the first film but there is buckets of blood in Halloween 2.

i love the Halloween films, even the bad sequels. the Halloween series is what got me so interested in movies. but i don't know whether to be happy or nervous now that Rob Zombie is attached. i honestly wished the series had ended with H20 since it gave finality to the Michael Myers/Laurie Strode conflict, but i'm interested in just what Zombie is gonna bring to the table to make this film different from the previous films.

You know, that was said about Bill Murray and Garfield 2 on this very site not long ago. No matter how much you want to use that as much as you can, it doesn't fit here. Rob is a dark film fanatic, so this film is right up his alley.

But I'm also a bit worried he's just going to turn this into "How much can I get away with on an R rating?", after seeing his previous films. If he could make this dark, atmospheric, but still have a few creative kills to add that danger/tension factor, this could be great.

well, slasher films don't HAVE to be blood soaked to be considered slasher films, so i still consider halloween (and the rest of the series except the 3rd, oh god how i hate that movie) a slasher series. don't get me wrong, i still love the series. the first halloween was the first horror movie i ever saw as a kid, and i still love it today.
but i will admit, this series needs a DRASTIC change. and i am willing to give Zombie a shot. i don't think it will be anything like house of 1000 corpses or the devil's rejects, that's just silly. he may cast some people from those movies though...i mean think about it: Sid Haig (capt. spalding) as Dr. Loomis? that would actually be pretty cool!

i dunno, Dr. Loomis is one of those characters that i don't think could ever be dupilcated. Donald Pleasence brought so much to that role, and i don't think i could ever see anyone else as Loomis. it would be like having Lauire Strode played by someone else other than Jamie Lee Curtis. besides, i don't think having new actors reprise old beloved characters like Loomis is what this series needs and i don't think that's what Rob Zombie or Trancas has in mind either.
