Missy Elliott: The Movie
by Scott Weinberg | June 14, 2006
Discuss Article
I think there should be a law passed that says the following: You're not allowed to get your own biopic made until: A) You're over 50 years old, and/or B) You've actually done something important. Unfortunately, Unviersal Pictures doesn't ask my advice on these things, which is why we can soon expect to see a big-screen biopic about ... Missy Elliott.

According to Variety, Universal "has acquired a pitch from scribe Dianne Houston based on Elliott's life. Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal are on board to produce through their Gotham-based Tribeca Films...

Elliott has been in business with Universal before: She had a role in the Jessica Alba starrer "Honey." Born in Portsmouth, Va., in 1971, Elliott began her musical career with the girl group Sista. She then segued to a producing career before breaking out as a solo artist more than 10 years ago. Elliott writes and produces much of her own music."

--

So where the heck is Weird Al Yankovic's biopic already? I mean, if Missy Elliott's life story deserves two hours of cinema, whose DOESN'T?

Bobby De Niro, why are you putting money into this pile?

And I agree with a Weird Al biopic. He's actually contributed something worth listening to in the music world. His music is always funny, creative, energetic. Missy Elliot just turns on the beatbox and talks quickly. Well guess what, Weird Al can talk faster than her, just look at Hardware Store.

Plus, Weird Al's other movie, UHF is INFINITLY better than Honey could even dream to be.

I think you might be pleasantly surprised with this film.. its not going to be the gritty shit that 50 Cent put out.. Here's the director speaking on it:

“What’s compelling about [the story] is that Missy is a survivor of some of the most horrific abuse that you can imagine. Not just a survivor in terms of having lived through it, but do you know how in her videos she’s so completely on another planet? That began as a child; Missy had to create other realities in order to survive what she was going through. In a lesser person, she would have become a victim or bitter, but instead it fueled this creative spark and this amazing art in her.”

OMG, wouldn't it be awesome if Missy Elliott played....Missy Elliott!!! And I hope they can get A-list co-stars like Bow Wow and Ludacris attached to the film. And Paul Walker can play token white guy who tries to act black! This movies writes itself! Man, this is the dumbest idea i've ever heard. This is the kind of stuff you write a book about, not something you make a movie out of, especially since Missy is in her 30's and still at the peak of her career, at least wait until she's retired. If this is supposed to be an original idea then maybe Hollywood should just stick with making crappy sequels. I don't know about you guys but I'd watch Poseidon 2 over this crap any day...and that's sayin sumthin.

There are people who I guarentee have had more abuse and loss in their family than Missy could comprehend, and they go on to do things more inspired, creative and important than rapping. That little paragraph sounds like it came out of someone whos Missy's "yes man". I'm not doubting the fact that Missy was abused, I'm saying that "I was abused and now I'm a rapper." doesn't justify a biopic about the person, especially when they are 30 and still have a career.

But what I hope for is this film is made and tanks so everyone involved loses money. Yes, even you Bobby, because you don't read the scripts that are thrown at you anymore.

I know that quote was intended well and sincerely . . .

. . . but . . .

I found it just outrageously funny, like a lawyer's super-flimsy excuse at validating hot air.

Hopefully, for all our sakes, I'm wrong.

No way am I seeing this, though.

In her defense, Missy is less of a rapper and more of a producer. That being said, they definitely should NOT make a movie about her. Although I did like the video where she dresses up like Megaman. If they make the whole movie like that, then maybe I'll care enough about the movie to ask other people how it was (although not enough to actually watch it myself).

my guess is that it won't be so much of a biopic as a look into a small part of her life. think "8 mile" or "get rich or die trying", and not so much "ray"

that said, i didn't like any of the above mentioned movies.

Timbaland's beats/production=Missy Elliot's career. This is a bad idea and most of her music wouldn't sell at ALL if it weren't for Timbalands bass heavy beats. People dont listen to MIssy for rap or meaningful lyrics, they listen to it cause its played over and over until, until you tolerate it. And chicks love it. In no way does she deserve a biopic. I like how they threw in that she was in Honey. Hot Garbage.

If any female rapper deserves a biopic, its Lil' Kim. At least she has an interesting life story. Abused by her father, kicked out at 14 onto the sreets of Bed Stuy ( the heart of the 80's crack epidemic) has to sell drugs to survive, saved by Biggie who's death ultimately destroys her. At least in a Kim movie they could explore how Lil' Kim destroyed Kimberly Jones.

I see the future......I see ATL 2 but about Missy Eliot. Also, UHF is better than Honey especially as a comedy which is what Honey was.
