Weekly Ketchup: Spielberg Speaks, World Trade Center Reactions, Shyamalan Talking Potter, And More!
by Nick Hershey | July 21, 2006
Discuss Article
Steven Spielberg talks about his upcoming projects, and other things; early reactions to Oliver Stone's "World Trade Center;" Comic-con is well underway in San Diego; and Denzel Washington to star in "Halo?"

In other news, "Iron Man" the animated series will debut before "Iron Man" the movie hits theaters; Joseph Fiennes will star in the WWI film "The Red Baron"; Haley Joel Osment was hospitalized after flipping his car; and Colin Farrell gets accosted by a crazy woman during taping of The Tonight Show. Read on for details.

Could it be?

Spielberg Talks "Indy 4," "Jurassic Park 4," "Transformers," etc.
You simply won't find a bigger Steven Spielberg fan than Steven Awalt. The guy's website, SpielbergFilms.com, is an absolute shrine to one of the planet's most beloved filmmakers. Heck, the man himself even stops in from time to time to keep up with all the gossip. (He was never asked to direct "Angels & Demons," by the way.) Anyway, Steven A. finally got to interview Steven S., and the result is a few mild scoops.

Early Reactions to "World Trade Center"

Make a movie about 9/11 and you're bound to get people talking. Release two high-profile movies in the same year, and you're bound to get lots of comparisons. A handful of sites have seen the Oliver Stone's "World Trade Center" already, and here's a sampling of their thoughts...

Shyamalan Applying for Harry Potter Job?

Mega-successful filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan likes to remind people that he was offered the director's chair on the very first "Harry Potter" flick, but had to turn it down because he was busy with his own movies -- but the guy's been on the press circuit a lot lately, and now he seems pretty darn interested in a "Potter" gig.

Comic-Con: It Begins With "TMNT," "Saw III," and More!

Geeks from across the world will converge at the San Diego Convention Center today to get their annual fix of comics, movies, and pop culture, and RT will be right there bringing you coverage of the panels, major announcements, interviews, and the daily B.O. levels from the floor (and I don't mean Box Office).

Denzel as "Halo" Master Chief?

Sometimes a rumor's so flimsy you have to ignore it, and sometimes a rumor's too juicy to dismiss. This one falls in the latter category: Could Denzel Washington be in line to star as the heroic Master Chief in (producer) Peter Jackson's "Halo" adaptation?

In Other News:
  • An "Iron Man" animated series will hit TV next Fall before the "Iron Man" movie comes out in May of 2008.
  • Colin Farrell accosted by strange woman on tonight show.
  • Haley Joel Osment was hospitalized after flipping his Saturn, to the surprise of many who were unaware that Osment (18) is now old enough to drive and vote. Osment is expected to make a full recovery.
  • Daniel Clowes is adapting his Eisner winning story "Death Ray" for Jack Black's Black And White production company.
  • Joseph Fiennes will star in "The Red Baron" about WWI's most celebrated fighter pilot.
  • Russell Crowe is in talks to star in "The Prince Of Providence," about the corrupt former mayor of Providence, R.I., Vincent A. "Buddy" Cianci.
  • John Malkovich and Jeremy Sisto will star in "Gardens Of The Night," about abducted children who are set free to fend for themselves.
  • Ryan Reynolds, Derek Luke, and Isla Fisher are set to star in the romantic comedy "Definitely, Maybe."
  • Christian Slater, Steve Buscemi, and John Cleese will provide voices for Weinstein Co.'s animated "Igor," about a mad scientist's hunchbacked lab assistant.
  • The creative duo behind "High Tension" and "The Hills Have Eyes" will produce the stalker thriller "P2."
  • And finally, Colin Farrell was accosted by a strange woman earlier today while taping The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Apparently, the woman interrupted the interview and accused Farrell of stalking her, and then threatened to "see him in court." Unfortunately, the weird episode will not been shown to TV viewers. Doesn't NBC know a ratings gold mine when they see one?

Drives women crazy, or attracts crazy women?

Peter Jackson's been involved in a movie which brought a beloved book to screen, and also a remake of a much loved film.... and now a computer game is next. What's next?

Hmm, Shyamalan doing Potter...
On the one hand I feel I should be mortified by the idea, since he's not exactly known for directing that sort of thing. On the other hand, I don't believe I've ever seen him direct someone else's material. So do we have a Tim Burton scenario here - does an extremely good job with his own material, but when using someone else's stuff he twists it to look like his own material, sometimes out of all recognition?
I'm not sure that Shyamalan will be given the job. Hollywood executives are probably too conservative to want to take that risk, but if it doesn't happen I'll always wonder...
