Trailer Bulletin: Eric Bana & Drew Barrymore in "Lucky You"
by Scott Weinberg | July 27, 2006

I was wondering when we'd start getting smacked with all the poker movies ... and here comes one! Curtis Hanson's "Lucky You" stars Eric Bana, Drew Barrymore, and Robert Duvall. It looks pretty cool to me, and it opens on September 8th. Check out the trailer right here.

"Huck Cheever is a blaster—a player who goes all out, all the time. But in his personal relationships, Huck plays it tight, expertly avoiding emotional commitments and long-term expectations. When Huck sets out to win the main event of the 2003 World Series of Poker—and the affections of Billie Offer, a young singer from Bakersfield—there is one significant obstacle in his path: his father, L.C. Cheever, the poker legend who abandoned Huck's mother years ago."

Co-starring Debra Messing, Jean Smart, and Charles Martin Smith, "Lucky You" also has a pretty impressive screenwriters' pedigree. It was written by Hanson ("L.A. Confidential") and Eric Roth ("Munich").

What's up with the realese date? If you ask me, this should be opening in November. Eric Bana is an excellent actor and this looks like it could be his latest showcase.

Gawd this movie was a waste of two hours of my life! Excellent cast, very good performances, but the script was just... well, I guess it wasn't all that bad since I guessed some of the ending wrong, but it just wasn't what I would call an enjoyable movie. You can't believe or buy into any of the characters; they were too thin to understand and the male lead characters were too mean to relate to. The production values were excellent, the soundtrack acceptable, the sets and costumes and all that stuff was fine, but the story was crap, the dialog was often miserable but mostly the premise of the film, the occasionally abrupt editing that left gaps in the story line made the whole viewing "experience" something that I wouldn't wish on anyone.
