George Romero's Ready with Another Zombie Movie
by Scott Weinberg | August 25, 2006
Discuss Article
Fresh off the success of his "Land of the Dead," zombie-master George A. Romero has decided to "go indie" on his next "Dead" sequel, which will be called "Diary of the Dead" and goes into production this October.

From The Hollywood Reporter: "George A. Romero has signed on to write and direct "George A. Romero's Diary of the Dead," following in the tradition of his 1968 cult classic "Night of the Living Dead." With a story mixing elements of "The Blair Witch Project" and the long-running "Dead" series, the film will follow a group of college students shooting a horror movie in the woods who stumble upon a real zombie uprising. When the onslaught begins, they seize the moment as any good film students would, capturing the undead in a "cinema verite" style that causes more than the usual production headaches. After going more than two decades without making an independently financed zombie film, Romero told his production partner Peter Grunwald he was frustrated working within the system. "I was trying to convince Peter we could just run off and do it ourselves," he said."

Cool!

The "Dead" series goes like this: "Night" (1968), "Dawn" (1978), "Day" (1985), and "Land" (2005).

Interesting
This one could go either way I suppose but I'm holding out hope. I'm always one to support independant films so I'll give it a go regardless. Just not sure about the whole students 'making a movie who stumble onto zombies' approach. Is it just me or does this indicate it will move out of the 'universe' set by the previous dead films??? I mean from Dawn through to Land the world is pretty much taken over by the zombies bar a few pockets of humanity. Film students wouldnt really have a place there - unless its set before or during Night - ala the 60's?

Anyway - heres hoping. I've always been a Romero fan so I'm pretty optimistic.

Aren't all zombie movies the same? Lots of cartoony gore, people dying or getting turned one by one, then a small group of people make one final stand at some mall or compound. Boring.

This genre needs to branch out. Like a zombie romantic comedy, or a zombie going on an Indiana Jones-like quest.

Did anyone else think Land of the Dead sucked?
The original Dawn was awsome but the new one was utter crud but it got ok reviews?!
I love good horror but after the last effort I'll be waiting for DVD.
He hasn't gotten better with age thats for sure.

you obviously haven't experienced the glory that is C.H.U.D. II: Bud the C.H.U.D.

there is no way that you have lived a full, complete life until you have seen said masterpiece, a glorious piece of transcendental art if there ever was one.

land of the dead is good movie
the 1st time I watched land of the dead, i was underwhelmed by the story but loved the pace; on subsequent viewings, i easily appreciated the "capitalists suck" theme and the heroes don't always win subplot was pretty cool... after 4 viewings, I really like Land of the Dead.... the Dawn of the Dead remake is a fairly creepy movie.... I've seen all the Deads in the theaters and I'll go see this new one too.... you can do a lot with the zombie theme....

anyways, I thought Land of the Dead was great. the idea for this new movie sounds just ok, but it's Romero, so I will give it a chance. at least it's something new

The guy has gone completely insane.

Night is my favorite horror movie, Dawn isn't far behind, but Land was terrible. This sounds even worse...

hmmm...it may be an "indie," but the title may confuse people into thinking this will be a sequel to Romero's other Dead films, and it doesn't sound like it will be. maybe he could call it "The Zombie Diaries" or something, although it almost sounds like a chick flick like "The Princess Diaries." he should at least change the name so it isn't "______ of the Dead" to keep audience confusion to a minimum.

Some people are just better with limited resources. Him indicating a dislike for working with a major studio bodes well. I think Romero gets way off track when he's got a big budget so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt on this one. I sure do wish his version of "Resident Evil" would have gotten made. Great script.

If you haven't already, watch "Shaun of the Dead".

It's not simply a rip-off comedy, and is highly original for a zombie film. It's somewhat on the low side of the gore spectrum, and has enough big laughs to appeal to many people. It wasn't a big hit, but check it out- it will be well worth it.

Land of the Dead DID suck. Completely. Utterly. It was even worse than "Day of the Dead", where basically every other word had to be "fuck". "Land" has poor characterization and plotting to go along with an unoriginal script- something most horror films suffer from.

Land of the Dead had to be one of the worst films I've seen in the last few years.

It was bad, but it wasn't THAT bad.

I think Romero needs to drop the CGI crap. It's much better for the film when it's all Savini-style make-up effects, not shoddy CGI blood splatter.

This could be either very good or very bad, and I'm hoping he learns his mistake from Land and focuses more on the epidemic and less on the effects.

Land was an absolute crap pile. I love Dawn, and the remake was fantastic. It saddens me the Day remake won't be up to par with Dawn.

Romero is too hyped. He's not a good film maker. Night was ok. Dawn had a unique story. Day just sucked.

He needs to retire.

Now this sounds good. It takes us back to original Romero. Small group of people trapped while zombies take over. I don't like the name, though.

Land of the Dead was okay. I didn't think it was as good as Night or Dawn, but c'mon... those can't be beaten. He says he's tired of working in the studio system, so maybe it'll be like his earlier films. I would love it if they did it like they were film students in the 60's when the original zombie outbreak starts.

Just change the name....

No offense, but I thought the Dawn remake was weak. The Day remake will probably not be much better. Here's hoping this new one is a throw back to the first 2 films in the series.
