Zach Braff Talks "Fletch"
by Scott Weinberg | September 06, 2006
Discuss Article
Comedic actor Zach Braff has quite a few gigs on his plate: His newest movie ("The Last Kiss") is set to open next week, he's about to get started on the sixth (and probably final) season of "Scrubs," and he's got that all-new rendition of "Fletch" to look forward to...

From an interview with ComingSoon.net: "Bill Lawrence is definitely writing and directing 'Fletch,' and there's a good chance I'll do it. I've just got to talk to Uncle Harvey…I was the one who told Harvey he should hire Bill. Bill's a huge Fletch fan. The books aren't as wacky and silly as the Chevy Chase movies were, so there was talk for awhile of going back to the books and not having that level of comedy in them, and Bill and I both disagreed.

"That's what made the movie so great. It's one of the most quoted movies ever, especially by guys. Why would you not tap back into what's funny about that? Definitely go back to the books 'cause the books are brilliant, but we want to still make it a comedy. Bill uses the great analogy of 'Beverly Hills Cop.' He's like, 'If you look at 'Beverly Hills Cop,' some people think it's one of the funniest comedies ever, but it's an action movie with great adventure and real stakes,' and he wants to do that with 'Fletch.' The books have real stakes and real action in them, but they also have some of the funniest, witty dialogue ever written."

I'm looking forward to it.
Since there are nine Fletch books to draw from I don't consider this a true remake and Braff is a good casting choice. (I wonder if they ever considered adapting the Son of Fletch books?) And the Kevin Smith/ Jason Lee version would have been horrible, thank god that went through. May Fletch live for a new generation.

It's not a remake, it's supposedly a prequel. Comedy characters just don't seem to work when replacement actors have to be used, so I'm skeptical. Plus Chase was awesome as Fletch - it'll be a tough act to follow. I wish they'd make another sequel to Fletch with Chevy still in the role. The story could be around Fletch's last big news story/case before retirement!

why the hate?
Why do you say that Smith/Lee would be a diaster? Lee has proven he's an excellent comedic talent and Smith has excellent talent in writing, not only writing, but bring out the best in Lee (and Affleck). Fletch Won would have been an excellent project. I think Braff is a great choice as well, but Smith/Lee would have been just as worthy a pairing for this prequel!

I think Braff is cool and all, but shit I think I'd rather like to see a sequel, and I'm sure chevy would like to see a paycheck so they should make that happen.

100% agree with Now it's dark! Braff "thinks" he's a movie star now, but he never will be!

I love Fletch, and Jason Lee would make the perfect Fletch, seriously that's the way it should be. I like that comment.
