Jagshemash! Enjoy the Opening Scenes of "Borat!"
by Scott Weinberg | October 24, 2006
Discuss Article
Well, the first four minutes of the opening scenes, anyway. Yep, the first 240 seconds of "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan" can be yours for free, and all you need is an internet connection and a browser.

YouTube is where you can watch the clip, and watch it you should, as "Borat" is, in my opinion, one of the funniest movies of the past ten years. Yep, I said it.

The pseudo-documentary by Brit comedian Sacha Baron Cohen follows his Kazakh reporter, Borat, on a cross-country trip across the United States in search of cultural lessons he can glean from Americans. Along the way he encounters urban youth, Southern society folk, USC frat boys, rodeo fans, driving instructors, car salesmen, politicians, homosexuals, and even Pamela Anderson.

Currently at 100 percent on the Tomatometer (with 15 reviews), "Borat" is winning over just about everybody. Critics are calling it "uproariously funny" (Variety's Leslie Felperin), "sharply pointed satire" (Salon.com's Stephanie Zacharek), and "the most devastating and hilarious semi-documentary indictment of American cultural and political hegemony imaginable" (RogerEbert.com's Jim Emerson).

"Borat" hits theaters on November 3rd. And don't bring your parents.

Well, yeah, that was pretty funny and I am looking forward to this one, but it wasn't laugh-out-loud funny the way all the reviews so far have been suggesting. I'm assuming that will come as Borat travels to America. I'm really hoping this won't be case where the hype gives way to expectations the film can't meet. I mean, all these critics who were so blown away probably had no idea what to expect and were shocked and surprised. But the rest of us reading things like "best comedy in ten years" and expecting to be blown away... can any film meet those expectations.

I thought the whole ting was laugh out loud funny. "Kazakhstan has three problems, economic, social and jew" That's hilarious. I cannot wait to see this movie

Yeah, that was one line I really liked, and I found it all to be funny, but it is the kind of thing you get on "South Park," "The Daily Show," "Letterman," "Team America," and countless others, not to mention "Ali G," of course. So why is this "the best comedy ever"? I love this type of humor but maybe the problem is I like it so much I have seen so much of it. So if this is something that is supposed to wow me it just might not be able to. And won't the one-joke that was funny for 4 minutes in that clip or in the TV sketches get old over a whole 90 minutes? I don't know. Like I said in my first post, maybe there is more to it once Borat hits America. I hope so. I'm not dissing the comedy here by any means, I just think, looking at the tomato reviews, this movie can't possibly, even if it is very good and very funny, live up to that praise. Not based on those four minutes anyway. I'll still give it a fair shot though. I've wanted to see it since I heard about it.

I can not believe you would include "Team America" in that list-- did you actually laugh out loud more than once or twice in that crap?? And "Letterman" would not dare do this type of humor, he only pretends he does. Also, this may have a similar brand of humor as "South Park", but going by what people who actually saw it have said (not to mention the 100% rating), this will probably be a lot funnier and more intellegent

You don't have to agree - and we don't have to debate - the comedy tallents of Letterman or how funny "Team America" was (very, for the record). My point is, this sort of thing is tackled in a similar way quite often. As I have said twice (now a third time) I am going by the 100% rating and word of mouth and hoping this will be great. But I'm wondering if it can live up to those reviews, especially for someone who sees a lot of this stuff.

I really consider Team America one of the funniest movies in recent times, the movie really turns everything on its head. And i just love how matt and trey created an escape clause where no matter how offended or apalled by the topic and the content of the film they can say its just a bunch of puppets! Its brilliant!

Mockumentaries like "Spinal Tap" and "Best in Show" use actors to simulate the bogus situations in the film, but from the trailers and the commercials it looks like Sacha Cohen actually went up to regular people and told them he was from Kazakhstan and then filmed their reactions to his behavior . . . does anyone know if he used actors or if those people really thought he was making a film to benefit his glorious nation? I'm just curious. If he did use actors, I guess it's a credit to him because it looks veeeery real. And very funny.

only actor in the film was cohen. everybody else was filmed without knowing Cohen was acting then signed some papers after being humiliated on camera. and from what i've read it is incredible that Cohen manages to stay in character all the time. this movie will be utterly fantastic.

His friend Azamat Bagatov is an actor played by Ken Davitian. Plus, it's unclear whether Pamela Andersons was acting or not.
