Disney Signs On with "John Carter of Mars"
Summary
Not too long ago Jon Favreau was this close to directing "John Carter of Mars" for Paramount Pictures, but the studio let their option on the property lapse -- and we pretty much thought the project was full-bore comatose. But now it looks like Disney wants the material! Back to Article

Zen Bullet writes: on Jan 17 2007 07:48 AM The problem with books by Edgar Rice Burroughs is that their adaptations have the potential to be horribly mistreated. They're about as fun as adventure stories can get . . . but one has to bring an added IQ to them. I see the result as a combination between Cornel Wilde's "The Naked Prey" and something akin to an art noveau-inspired ID4 (if you're a fan of Frank Frazetta's art for the series, you'll have some idea what I mean). The first three novels of the series would make an awesome film trilogy . . . as they combine to form a complete story-arc. More than anything, the adaptation needs a director with a strong personal vision . . . like Peter Jackson for LOTR, Nolan for Batman, or Sam Raimi for Spider-Man. Ridley Scott comes to mind. John Carter needs a combination of Ed Norton's authoratative wit and Clive Owen's stoicism. If Kenneth Brannagh were younger and taller(and in Hamlet mode), he'd almost be right for the role(in fact, he'd be perfect to DIRECT the film). The Princess requires an actress who exudes both intelligence and beauty(a younger Virginia Madsen). And it would be prudent to cast really gifted actors in the fully-alien motion-capture roles . . . from Sola all the way to the White Apes. (Reply to this) |

Instead he'll probably end up with more hacks along the lines of Brad Fuller or Michael e-Bay. (Reply to this) |
