Who's Ready for "Forrest Gump 2"?
A few years back I was in a bookstore and saw a paperback called "Gump & Co.," which was (obviously) a follow-up to "Forrest Gump." I remember wondering why they hadn't made a movie based on the second novel, and now I know A) why they didn't, and B) when they might.
Seems that there was some bad blood (as in debts and litigation) between original "Gump" author Winston Groom and Paramount, but one source indicates that all involved parties have become friends again, which means Eric Roth's screenplay for the sequel may (again) see some attention. No word yet on Tom Hanks' involvement in the project, but if anyone other than Hanks is hired to play the role of Forrest Gump, I vow to never see this sequel. Ever. I mean it.
Seems that Gary Sinise is already set to return, which seems like a solid start.

Zen Bullet writes: on Mar 08 2007 07:02 AM From what I know about the plot of the sequel, it would greatly undermine the whole point of the first film. Forrest Gump was an experiment to study the value of innocence and idealism amidst strife and conflict. Forrest's diminished IQ was simply a plot device in order to permit the experiment. One might call it an unqualified success regarding the importance of a positive mindset . . . which is where much of its comedy came from. However, for dramatic reasons, it sounds like the sequel would necessarily whittle Forrest back down to size. Frankly, I say leave the film alone. It's a classic. And I'm not interested in another lame prequel or sequel undermining a great film. (Reply to this) |

lonechicken writes: on Mar 08 2007 08:51 AM Forrest Gump was one of those rare "great" films I've really flip-flopped on. I used to love it. But now, I despise it. I still think it's well done and there are many funny parts, but the ideas in the movie beneath the surface really bugged me. Big Fish is a much better story about a guy from the deep south going out on a journey of discovery. He goes out and *makes* things happen for himself. Unlike Forrest who *lets* things happen to him and is somehow always rewarded, while people around him who try to make things happen usually end up getting punished. Not exactly the kind of thing I want to teach my kids. (Reply to this) |

That may have something to do with it being overplayed on the networks and basic cable stations the past ten or so years since it first premiered on TV. Besides that, I know what you mean. It bothered me that I was forced to think the death (or just punishment, like you said) of major characters was actually for the better (for them), but yet Gump was pretty much unwavering throughout. SpikesInMySkull writes: on Mar 08 2007 10:33 AM I have a rule: If a concept for a movie has been already been used a joke, you can't actually make a movie out of it that isn't a joke. This is for instance why I refuse to see or even take "Brokeback Mountain" seriously, the idea of a movie about gay cowboys was already a joke years earlier in an episode of South Park. This same rule applies to the movie Idenity, which has the same concpet as the fictious screenplay "The Three" in the movie Adaptation. A parody involving a sequal to Forest Gump was a central plot-device in the movie Cecil B. Demented. Hence, because it's already been a joke, it can't be a real movie. (Reply to this) |

Samwise Gamgee writes: on Mar 10 2007 01:51 PM I've got it! They could follow this up with Schindler's List 2, or we could call it Schindler's List Reloaded! Listne, I'm all for sequels. I think it's interesting at times to see a new take on the same characters, but some films just shouldn't be sequeled, and I think Forest Gump is as much on that list as Schindler's List is. It sounds that ridiculous to me. (Reply to this) |
