Rodriguez to Turn "Grindhouse" Trailer into Feature Film
While discussing "Grindhouse" with lucky fans at SXSW, Robert Rodriguez revealed that one of the movie's fake trailers will soon become a full-length feature film, starring Danny Trejo as a motorcycle-riding badass named Machete.
While the Machete character only appears between the split feature films in "Grindhouse," Rodriguez is clearly excited to give the knife-wielding, leather-clad character more screen time.
From IGN Movies: "It's an idea I came up with back during 'Desperado,'" said Rodriguez. 'When I met Danny, I said, 'This guy should be like the Mexican Jean-Claude Van Damme or Charles Bronson, putting out a movie every year and his name should be Machete.'

According to Rodriguez, the film will likely go direct-to-video stateside (fans, start lobbying for theatrical release now!), they have a script, and he'll at least partially direct the flick himself.
IGN Movies reports the announcement from SXSW, where Rodriguez also spilled a handful of "Grindhouse" spoilers and filming techniques he and Quentin Tarantino employed in their joint homage to exploitation cinema, coming next month.
In case you haven't seen the awesome trailers yet, "Grindhouse" is a double-bill of shoot 'em up action chock full of femme fatales, killer cars, and zombies; Rodriguez's half is a killer plague flick called "Planet Terror," while Tarantino's "Death Proof" promises a trio of hot Texas girls and Kurt Russell as a muscle car-driving loner named Stuntman Mike.

Matanuki writes: on Mar 12 2007 12:23 PM Rodriguez and Tarantino are two filmmakers I've always revered, so it is without bias when I say that Grindhouse looks totally stupid. Not sure about this Machete guy. But we'll see. (Reply to this) |

Everything about this movie looks fantastic to me. Especially Death Proof. I can't wait to see Kurt Russell back in full on John Carpenter badass mode. (Reply to this) |

Matanuki writes: on Mar 13 2007 05:48 AM In reply to this comment (#857915) Naw. I actually like horror, when it's good. when it challenges my mind and/or makes my skin crawl. And yeah, it's great to see Kurt Russel back in the saddle. So I agree with you on that. I'll of course check the dvd at some point. But my friends and I were in the theater sipping out contraband gin when they showed that gun leg nonsense and we all gave each other that same knowing look. That's a kind of catharsis that sets off my alarms. (Reply to this) |

Duckenheimer writes: on Mar 13 2007 07:40 AM In reply to this comment (#857921) When it challenges your mind/skin crawl? Respect, maybe the other guys comment should be rephrased to do you like exploitation horror? It's kind of a prequisite, the whole film is a continuation of exploitation grindhouse flicks, not an attempt to make the next Halloween, Dawn of the Dead or Hellraiser. My friends and I are into the silly side of stuff, movies like Return of The Living Dead, Basket Case, Bloodfeast 2 etc. And fans of those kind of movies are for whom Grindhouse is made for, and to us, the gun on yer one's leg was a pant wettingly good experience. (A completely natural evolution of the uber cool decision to replace Ash's arm with a chainsaw in Evil Dead 2. Its bad ass.) Someone who isn't a fan of B or Z grade horror... respect to your tastes, but the movie isn't for you in the first place. (Reply to this) |

Matanuki writes: on Mar 13 2007 07:55 AM In reply to this comment (#857922) Perhaps not, Duckenheimer. I guess I"m topsy-turvy when it comes to exploitation. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't. Ash's arm? Awesome. I loved it. The leg, however, makes me go "what?". lol. Different strokes for different folks. But considering the helmers, anyone who is hardcore into exploitation cinema will likely enjoy the two features sober. And with enough of that good ol' contraband gin, maybe I'll like em too. We'll see. (Reply to this) |

Stathis Borans writes: on Mar 13 2007 02:33 PM In reply to this comment (#857922) I'm a fan of all grades of horror (at least pre 1990. After that, the bad becomes unwatchable). Good horror is certainly fantastic, but few things are as entertaining as when the horror goes ridiculously wrong. God bless Basket Case, by the way. (Reply to this) |
