Will Miyazaki's Next Film Be His Last?

Summary

It's been speculated that legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki will retire after the release of his next film, "Ponyo on a Cliff," but now it looks like we'll have at least a year to worry about it. The flick's not scheduled for release until summer of 2008. Back to Article

while I love CGI and appreciate the limitless potential of it, Myazaki was the last true remaining force in hand-drawn animation. As studios have for the most part cast aside this form of animation, there always seemed to be respect of Miyazaki. Why is it that Japan seems to be the only country keeping this tradtion alive- even European countries have mostly thrown it aside

I guess my only only source of intellegently, hand-drawn animation will have to be from "Adult Swim", most of which comes from Japan anyway.

But honestly, don't we hear the same news story every time Miyazaki makes a new film. Orignally, Princess Mononoke was going to be his last. Then Spiritied Away. Then Howl's Moving Castle. I realize the guy is getting on in years and that retirement soon is a big possibility, but does anyone else feel like we're dealing with the boy who cried wolf right now? I suspect that this guy will be invovled in animation until the day he dies. Even if he does take a step back and allow others more control, I suspect he'll always be somewhat involved in the creative process.

I'm really looking foreward to seeing this. It really sounds like my kind of movie.

Anyone else know why we have to wait until pratically 2010 to see Earthsea in the states? I wanna know how Goro did with it.

I hope he goes back to the innocence of My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away, by far his best films, in my opinion.

Triplets of Belleville is a Canadian film, by the way.

And yeah, I'm not a fan of cgi effects incorporated into two dimensional films. It looks lame.

I love The Triplets of Belleville to death, but a large portion of the film is actually CGI. There's a featurette on the DVD about how they never could have afforded to make the film if it had been drawn traditionally. The good news is that it is possible to make a film with soul and a distinctive look unlike the endless misbehaving animal films the theaters have been deluged with.

2d is the only animated format that can be considered art. that's what Disney forgot and Miyazaki always remembered. please don't let this be his last.

I hope this isn't Miyazaki's last film. He's one of the most creative and magical filmmakers alive today, and it would be a shame for him to stop sharing his stories with us.

I'm very sorry to say that, but Goro's Earthsea is a HUGE dissapointment, a big mess without an atmosphere, lacking of good plot and with lame character development. Even animation got worse! There's no need to wait for it - I suggest to wait for a 'Ponyo' - at least older Miyazaki won't dissapoint and I'm 100% sure of it!
