Casting Rumor: Sarah Michelle Gellar to Join "Batman Begins" Sequel?
by Jeff Giles | March 30, 2007
Discuss Article
This is a brief one, but worth discussing regardless: According to Whedon.info, an anonymous "independent filmmaker" who had been angling to acquire the services of Sarah Michelle Gellar for an upcoming film recently had his hopes dashed when he received some disappointing news from Gellar's management. To quote Mr. Anonymous Filmmaker:

"Unfortunately, yesterday we were informed that she wouldn't be able to do it because there might be a clash with 'Batman.'"

As with all things in life, consider the source; there's the very real possibility that this is nothing but a bunch of unfounded hooey. On the other hand, with Maggie Gyllenhaal already on board to play Rachel Dawes, Gellar's involvement would give the film two female leads -- perhaps leading, as Cinematical has speculated, to the appearance of Bat-villain Harley Quinn.

This will need more corroboration before it's really worth taking seriously, but anything that might keep Gellar from making another would-be horror movie is good news in our book.

Batman Returns sequel?
I was both excited and terrified when reading the heading. Now, sadly, I realize it was only an error.

ok, are we talking here about a sequel to the 1992 flick "Batman Returns", or did the writer actually mean to say "Batman Begins"? I suspect the latter.

I'd love to see Sarah's in a Batman movie but how many characters do we have now?

I really like Sarah Michelle Gellar, silly horror movies aside, and I'd be SO EXCITED if she took on the roll of Harley Quinn, who is one of my favorite characters from the animated series.

This would be fantastic! She is so freakin hot and I've always thought she was a fine actress, though I'm really going off of the Buffy shows, not Scooby Doo. She would be a great love interest for Bale!

i have to be the jerk here, but i don't know about her. i really think she's only slightly better than katie holmes as an actress. but maybe she'll surprise me.

She could definately bring the physicality to Harley Quinn, I just hope her actings up to snuff or else this will be embarrassing with the cast they've assembled around her. Fingers crossed she brings her Cruel Intentions "A' game and not her Daphne from Scooby Doo "F-" game.

Let her play Dawes instead! Better than Maggie Gyllenhaal playing the part. Besides, it showed with "Buffy" that Gellar is a great actress with great scripts (ie- not Scooby Doo or The Grudge).

wow, Sarah Michelle Gellar as Harley Quinn? she can certainly handle the physicality of the role. and she can pull off the ditzy blond thing, just watch the episodes with scenes of Buffy's pre-slaying Valley Girl days.

she'd probably make a good Catwoman too. cross her "Buffy" toughness with her "Cruel Intentions" seductiveness and you'd have a Catwoman that would damn well make Batman hot under the cape.

This is on the same level, if not worse, than Katie Holmes. C'mon Buffy fans, she's a nickalodian actress and shouldn't be part of this cast. No way, no how. Why is everyone a fan of Harley Quinn anyway? If anything, it removes so much darkness from the Joker character. It's like the equivilant of Robin to Batman. The Joker should be by himself. He doesen't need a bright sidekick. That's just lame and would have been good only for Joel Schumachers Batman.

Great news, IMO.
Now I'm no fan of Buffy; I've seen a few eps. and SMG has done a pretty damn good job with what I saw. She's a really good actress, but she picks really poor projects, and her acting gets drowned by the rest of the film(s). She does good, but because the film was crap to begin with, no one really sees the good in Gellar's work.

And for the record, this guy is legit. Jett from BOF at first thought this was complete BS (a month or 2 ago when this story first happened), but then after doing some digging, he found out that this "independent film maker says..." story is 100% legit. He said "I'm not saying SMG is a lock for TDK. I'm just saying the film maker is legit". This isn't fan-started rumours here, boys. It's the real deal, and if we're lucky (well, the pro-SMG fans anway), SMG may end up in TDK.

She's popular as Harley Quinn, and even has some backing for Catwoman among fans, but as far as I've heard, she's only rumoured for Renee Montoya. FYI, Montoya is Latin, so this must be inspired casting if it does pan out. Harley seems like a more appropiate fit.

I would like to see her in it, not as Montoya though, she was great in Cruel Intentions.

she was very good in cruel intentions.

and oh-so-hot!

maybe not the best actress, but she is undoubtedly better than katie "i talk out of the side of my mouth" holmes.

i prefer gellar over mccadams and gyllenhaal

Films that are crap collect actors that are crap. End of story. Or is the same true of poor Freddie Prinze Jr. He's got such talent. Damn agents, can't they find that future Brando a good script?

So by that logic...
Al Pacino and Christopher Walken horrible for starring in Gigli? What about Tom Hanks and Ian McKellen for Da Vinci Code? Or Johnny Depp for Private Resort?

Sarah Michelle Gellar - good actress that makes bad film choices. But if she's cast in TDK, then it's a great career move and can only push the movie along for the better.

Well said. Look, I'm still using her stint in Cruel Intentions to sexually satisfy myself. And until that memory fades...

I see nothing here that could raise the film or sink it. It's no doubt a small role, but I think
she's made enough lousy films, she needs a Blockbuster to help her do 12 more Japanese horror remakes.
