Banderas Promises More Than 5 "Shrek" Movies
by Jen Yamato | April 26, 2007
Discuss Article
Do you like yourself some "Shrek"? Then you'll love this news: according to co-star Antonio Banderas, we'll get numbers 4 and 5 after this May's "Shrek The Third."

We'd already heard about plans to make a fourth "Shrek" (and a "Shrek the Halls" holiday special) but now Banderas -- or, as you may know from the film series, Puss In Boots -- says there will be at least five total installments (thanks to popular demand).

As Banderas told Coming Soon, his own character Puss will eventually get his own starring vehicle: "Now in between 4 and 5, Puss is going to have his own movie. It's going to be called "Puss In Boots: The Story of an Ogre Killer." I don't know if you realize but Donkey doesn't have a movie, himself. [Laughs]. And that will be it, from what Jeffery Katzenberg is communicating to us, but I don't know, if the character -- probably some place in the future they may take the character and do it again, and things like that -- but so far, there were going to be four, but they discovered the novel game [sic] them the opportunity to do five."

Banderas continues, "In fact, in number five -- if I am not wrong -- I'm going to play two characters. I'm going to play Puss and the badass brother that he has, a black cat. So it's an opportunity to do a different voice [puts on scratchy, American accent] "hey bro, how you doing man?" and things like that."

By our calculations that would make a veritable empire of the jolly ogre franchise; "Shrek" 4, "Shrek 5," "Puss In Boots," and the holiday television special makes at least seven "Shrek" films for viewing consumption! But before you discount the franchise's shelf life, Banderas reminds us that the first "Shrek" garnered more respect than your average animated movie:

"You've got to think that with this project, the first one -- and the second one -- were presented in the Cannes Film Festival with the whole entire intellectuality of Europe in the movie theater after they are watching very interesting Czechoslovakian movies [laughs] and suddenly, in the first time they were there, there was a big buzz in the entire festival that the movie could have won the Palme d'Or."

Somehow I don't see six Shrek-related movies happening.

Is "Intellectuality" a real word? and if so should it really be applied to film critics?

I'm not surprised. They're really successful and usually pretty good.

I don't have a problem seeing that many Shrek movies being made.
How many Friday the 13th or Halloween movies were made, after all?
And Shrek movies make a lot more moolah...

So essentially he's promising that the series will be run horribly into the ground? I mean, 2 was a drop in quality over one. Most series struggle to put out three solid movies, five that are actually watchable is virtually unheard of. I'd love to believe they could do it but experience screams otherwise.

The Shrek franchise could be the biggest money maker ever. Considering that the characters are stored on a hard drive, you don't have to worry about faces changing, people getting older, etc.

If they continue to write good, funny scripts, let them make 10 Shrek films for all I care.

To justify that many movies, they'd need to create a full-blown fantasy universe. Shrek actually has a pretty good backdrop and visual style, despite relying on lame gags. If they can dig deeper into the world, this might not be hackery.

hey if they can pull it off, more power to 'em. Personally I already saw kind of a sag in the second one, but maybe that's just me.

5? No, think bigger. Bring as much Shrek as possible.
5 is overkill.
Well, actually if they're as good as the first two, then i'll be fine with it.

Hey, if the fans keep paying money and the critics keep loving the movies why not make more? Shrek got a tomatometer review of 89% and Shrek 2 got 88%. Shrek 2 was a drop in quality over one? It looks to me like some people thought it was pretty good if not better than the first one (I loved the second one) not to mention there were 43 more reviews for the second one. It's not very often you see a sequel garnish just as much positive feedback as the first one. Would you object to 5 Spiderman movies? It could happen...

I am not that interested in seeing another Shrek. Personally I don't even want to see the third one. If they make five, fine with me. But I doubt I'll be seeing them. I liked the originality of the first one, but the second one was, to me, a drop in quality and increase in crudeness (if that's a word) and the third one looks worse. So, I'm tapping out of this one. And to Joker1984, I'd love to see five Spiderman movies.

I myself would love to see 5 Spiderman movies as well, all I'm saying is, why not keep going with a good thing? As long as a series still has a story to tell and it's not a bad one, I say keep em' going.

Even though I loved the first two...this is a bit too much Shrek. They should just stop at number three.
