New "Star Wars" Documentary to Premiere on The History Channel
"Empire of Dreams" is the name of the "Star Wars" documentary that came in that 4-disc original trilogy box set -- and it was pretty much a fanboy's dream. (Let's just say I've watched it more than once.) Now it looks like The History Channel has something to add.
Monday, May 28th is when THC will air "Star Wars: The Legacy Revealed," a two-hour documentary about, what else? The influences and impact of the "Star Wars" films, most likely focusing (I hope) on the first flick. (OK, the first trilogy.)
Here's a snippet from THC's press release: "Through interviews with politicians, academics, journalists and critics – all of whom weigh in on the enduring appeal of George Lucas' creations – the special demonstrates that Star Wars isn’t just a high-action adventure in space. It’s a remarkably complex and sophisticated story about power, politics, sin, spirituality and redemption—almost Shakespearean in its power, humor, presentation and influence.
The special makes the argument that Star Wars’ intensely compelling stories—borrowed from diverse traditions, from Greek mythology and American westerns to the Bible and even Vaudeville—compel us to explore some of the biggest questions of our time. STAR WARS: THE LEGACY REVEALED explores that view through interviews with politicians, academics, journalists and critics, who all weigh in on the creations of George Lucas. The special shows how seldom a movie can make us laugh and think about our role in the universe—which may be why it has stood the test of time."
Sounds good to me. My DVR is already set. (And if you forget, THC will re-air the doco just a few hours later.)

JUDGE DREDD writes: on May 14 2007 05:09 AM The Prequels also influenced film making! Awsome news that Star Wars documentary is on the History Channel, I just wish i had sky so i could watch it! Hopefully somone will upload a torrent of it. A comment in the report bothered me slightly, Although a MASSIVE original trilogy fan. And despite some terrible dialogue and characters in the prequel trilogy. I would hope the influences from the prequels are realized in the documentary! Phantom Menace, was the first movie to have a digital Army, it was an experiment based on Lucas own experiments from his Young Indy tv series. Without it we may not have had the great battles in Lord of the Rings etc.... Also it had the first Digital (3D) matte paintings. Without them we wouldnt have had the colluseum in gladiator and all other digital cityscapes. Attack of the clones, A new Digital camera was invented just to film that film, Now with that same technology, we can watch a Digitally filmed movie on the cinemascreen! Wheras before it was for tv, and home use! And revenge of the sith was just an wsome movie! And played out like a shakespearean tale! (Reply to this) |

Honestly, the original trilogy was good but the prequels were some of the worst movies ever made. (Reply to this) |

gratefuldawg writes: on May 14 2007 06:56 AM This is probably just the beginning of a new marketing ploy for the superduper boxset Lucas had spoken of prior to releasing the UNEDITED first trilogy; rather than doing it the first time on the original DVD set. But given that it kind of tanked in sales, that effort fell flat. Ill admit I bought both copies, despite the transfer and the extra disc which I already owned and I also fell for the hype on the prequels; each time knowing they progressively got worse. StarWar fans I think inherit/ and or prone to the battered wife syndrome or something to that effect with this series and Lucas, because we can never say enough is enough. Its kind of sad, yet amazing that a little piece of celluloid spanning over thirty years still entices discussions of its own importance. Perhaps its time to grow up and leave the toys in the sandbox, where they belong. (Reply to this) |

Sputnik99 writes: on May 14 2007 11:36 AM I've given thousands of my hours to the Star Wars name, but I'll admit I'm getting tired of stuff like this. How many more times can we hear "Star Wars changed Science Fiction forever!" Still, it's for the 30th anniversary, no doubt. And I'm way too loyal to just ignore it. Nothing better on TV to watch. Sigh Remember, Star TREK likes to think its the most important contribution to mankind, too. Star WARS just gets more documentaries about it. (Reply to this) |

crudebob writes: on May 14 2007 11:44 AM In reply to this comment (#865195) First of all it doesn't cost anything to see this documentary and if there wasn't an audience it wouldn't have been made. So what are you bitching about? If you don't like it, don't watch it. (Reply to this) |

DarthTall writes: on May 14 2007 04:16 PM Get over yourselves! What the hell is wrong with some people?! I am a life-long Star Wars fan who understands Lucas' genius. Hey, if you're not a fan, then don't watch it. Oh, and just try to ignore the man's eternal influence on pop culture. I think it's sad that the best thing kids have to worship today is garbage like Spiderman. I realize that it's off topic, but with the exception of Batman Returns, all comic book movies have all but completely missed their mark. Everyone sitting here trashing all things Lucas will be watching Indy 4 and the Star Wars TV show over the next couple of years. (Reply to this) |

Azlam Orlandu writes: on May 14 2007 09:13 PM Can't you crybabies let those of us who enjoy the prequels have our fun too? Seriously you guys live to try to ruin everyone's fun. You must be a real blast at parties. Those of us who still like Lucas understand your complaints. But what I'll never understand is why you obsess about movies that you claim to despise. I hate the Matrix, but everytime I see a Matrix thread I don't pop in and give some douchebag response, I just let the fans have their fun. (Reply to this) |

Oh, and I may have not have noticed it before, but Scott W. I love that pic of the original VHS release box of SW. (Reply to this) |
