"Hellboy 2" Tidbits -- And a Love Interest for Abe?
Actor Doug Jones recently shared a few words with Sci-Fi.com, and some of the covered topics include: three roles for "Hellboy 2" (and a love interest), as well as his feelings on being "voiced over" on "Fantastic Four 2."
Regarding the romantic evolution of "Hellboy's" Abe Sapien character, Mr. Jones says "So just like a 13-year-old with his first crush, this is how you're going to see Abe this time. A portion of him. Will this affect his decision-making powers? Does it make us stupid when we're in love for the first time? It did me, so let's see what happens to Abe." In addition to Sapien, Jones will also play characters called The Chamberlain and The Angel of Death. Busy guy.

Regarding "Hellboy 2: The Golden Army," we've learned that the plot kinda goes like this: "An ancient truce between humankind and the invisible realm is broken, and a ruthless leader defies his bloodline and awakens an unstoppable army of creatures." Cooool.
And while he expresses deep respect for Laurence Fishburne, Jones admits that being "dubbed out" as Silver Surfer was kind of a sting: "This is a painful issue for me ... For any actor [it] would be. No actor wants to see a portion of their performance taken away."
You can also check out more of Doug Jones when the awesome "Pan's Labyrinth" hits DVD on Tuesday.

The characters he brought to life so far with just his movements are amazing. I don't think it was necessary to dub over his Silver Surfer character in FF 2. Although Silver Surfer is obviously very powerful, I've never though of him as a bad*ss. From the way that Doug mentions this switch, I don't think it was originally planned this way. If that's true, he was definitely cheated. They didn't have someone else do Andy Serkis's voice when he was Gollum and I don't think that it was necessary to have different voice in this instance. In Pan's Labyrith they wanted a native Spanish speaker for Doug's character, so that voice over made sense. When he is Abe in Hellboy, the used David Hyde Pierce, which makes sense because he has this sort of scholarly personality, and I think that he probably knew about this ahead of time. Is that his voice we hear speaking the Faun's lines? No, the faun's voice is done by the man who also narrated, Pablo Adan. (Reply to this) |
