"Metal Gear Solid" Moving On Without "Solid Snake"
Actor turned screenwriter David Hayter provided the voice for Solid Snake in the "Metal Gear Solid" video games -- but that doesn't mean he's working on the movie version.
Despite being very 'connected' to the project and being the co-writer on the first two "X-Men" flicks, Sony said No Thanks to his "Metal Gear Solid" treatment. According to sources, Mr. Hayter's take was "Metal Gear as the Apocalypse Now of the digital age, with Snake at the center of a swirling whirlpool of Genomic/military madness." Whatever that means.
No doubt the writer will simply move on to new projects; he also penned a draft of Zack Snyder's "Watchmen" adaptation.

Azlam Orlandu writes: on May 17 2007 01:25 AM David Hayter is one of those talents who appears to be very in touch with the material he's working on. I think it's sad that the man who is in all essence Solid Snake as well as an accomplished writer is having his work turned down. In all likelyhood a Metal Gear script written by anyone but he or Kojima is likely to be farther away from the source material than most fans would like. (Reply to this) |

SolidChamp writes: on May 17 2007 03:42 AM It sounds like David Hayter had a good idea for some serious material. He probably wanted to write the film in a way that made it more accessible to a wide audience without relying too much on the video game for inspiration. If his treatment truly was in the same vein as "Apocalypse Now", then he most likely had a potentially good film on his hands. Chances are, the studio wants to go in the lame direction that every other movie based on a video game went, making a stupid kids movie with lots of PG action and dumb one liners. God the studio is gonna screw this up bad, I can almost taste it. (Reply to this) |

zbbrox writes: on May 17 2007 08:45 AM Bad news Hayter gets the material and is a decent writer, sounds to me like a studio intent on producing something glossy and marketable instead of interesting and true to the source. (Reply to this) |

gamejediben writes: on May 17 2007 09:15 AM I cannot begin to express how @#%^! pissed off I am about this! David Hayter IS Solid Snake. He is as much a part of the franchise as Kojima is! To Hell With Hollywood! They woudn't know a good story if it came over and bit them on the ass! (Reply to this) |

bullseye2121 writes: on May 17 2007 09:23 AM Without Hayter, this movie better get a good director and most of all writer. The only other thing i would suggest is getting Hugh Jackman as Snake, if he's even in it. And last of all Hayter can just use his movie script to be a new game, wouldn't you rather play it than watch it? (Reply to this) |

Neclord writes: on May 17 2007 09:39 AM That makes...how many scripts of his that have been turned down? Still, too bad, sounds like he really knows what the series "is". (Reply to this) |

RandomVirus writes: on May 17 2007 10:38 AM The only person who knows Solid Snake more than Hayter is Kojima himself. I'm feeling very let down with Sony pushing this script away. I would hope that Kojima is at least intimately involved with the project still, otherwise we're looking at yet another piece of tripe adaptation of a game. (Reply to this) |

dagreenman18 writes: on May 17 2007 12:11 PM wait, Sony is behind the movie. of course this was gonna happen. it's sony we arfe talking about. they haven't had a good idea since LittleBigPlanet. and even then, there's alot of holes in it. Consider this; the last movie based on a lucrative license that Sony put out, was Spiderman 3. NO ONE IN THE RIGHT MIND IS GOING TO WANT AN EMO DANCING SOLID SNAKE WHO FUCKING (Reply to this) |

bribios writes: on May 17 2007 01:06 PM In reply to this comment (#865731) ...I kinda do. Hayter's take on the movie does sound crazy, but at the same time incredibly fitting for a Metal Gear movie. The game series has always been pretty far out there in terms of story. (Reply to this) |

BReeG writes: on May 17 2007 03:08 PM Stupid, stupid move. Hayter is a talented writer who has a passion for the series and knows it inside and out - he was perfect for this!!! I've officially lost all faith in this project if that's the kind of decision they're going to make (his script sounds cool, too, fuckin hell). (Reply to this) |

N720MF writes: on May 29 2007 11:17 PM Everything costs so much these days; if they went with Hayter's script, it'd most definitely be R-rated (a lot less money than PG-13) and like some of you said, out there in terms of story (harder to market = less money, again). It also would have been 10x better than what Sony will eventually settle on. It really sucks that studios have to focus on the potential profits they could make and a lot of times not on telling a great story (fairly) true to the source material. (Reply to this) |
