"Fanboys": It's Not Just for "Star Wars" Fans
The geek-inspired "Fanboys" is gearing up for the "Star Wars" Celebration, where they will show scenes and answer questions. Star Jay Baruchel gave a preview for anyone worried that they’d be left out of the fun if they're not a "Star Wars" Fan. The film tells the story of late '90s teens trying to steal a copy of "Episode I" for their dying friend.
"If you're any semblance of a movie nerd, it's not just for "Star Wars" fans is the main thing," said Baruchel. "I made damn sure, because I’m not really a "Star Wars" fan, I just got every kind of "Highlander" and "Freejack" reference in there that I could. There's a lot, I think I even got a "Buckaroo Banzai." If you like movies as much as I do, you'll like it. It’s really ridiculous."
George Lucas gave the film his blessing and allowed them to use authentic "Star Wars" material, but other big sci-fi franchises said no. "Star Trek" and Viacom would have nothing to do with us. So all of it is quite clearly supposed to be "Star Trek" but maybe instead of a triangle, it's a triangle with one more spike coming out of it. There's a statue of Kirk fighting Kahn and they’ve both got huge erections. It’s that kind of movie."

Phil P. writes: on Feb 11 2009 02:48 AM I reckon it looks pretty good, especially as now its back to the original 'cancer plot'. Shame its only got a limited US release though (55 theaters is a pretty bad deal). Another pro-fanboy film is 'The People vs George Lucas' (www.peoplevsgeorge.com), where fanboys/girls get to side in favor or against Lucas. Thankfully, its not your bog-standard 'aren't geeks weird' take, so reckon that'll be worth a look too :-) (Reply to this) |
