New Animation Company to Deliver "Samurai Jack," "Neverhood"
by Scott Weinberg | June 27, 2007
Discuss Article
If you're a fan of Cartoon Network's "Samurai Jack" or DreamWorks' "Neverhood" video game, then you'll be happy to know that 2-D animated movie versions are on the way.

A new company called Frederator Films will focus on animated fare that's not necessarily for the small kiddies. The first three project out of the gate for Frederator will be:

-- "Samurai Jack," with series creator Genndy Tartakovsky on board to write and direct.

-- "The Neverhood," based on a video game I've never played. Game creator Doug TenNapel has been hired to bring the adaptation home.

-- "The Seven Deadly Sins," a "hip-hop" project that's already got Don King on board as a voice-cast member.

All of the FF projects will be 2-D animated, and probably all sorts of "hip."

These will revive animated films and will be better than any of the CGI crap around now.

A Samurai Jack Movie!?!
SWEET. Maybe Genndy'll finally give some closure to that great show. I eagerly await AKU's downfall and Jack's return to the past.

The other two, i couldn't care less about.

One thing I will miss from the Samurai Jack movie is Mako, who died this past year, as the voice of Aku. I don't care who they get to replace him, they won't be as good. Rest in peace, Mako.

hmm maybe this will give some hope that they will re-release the game Neverhood. I never played it, but I hear it was quite good, and I always regret not purchasing it when I could.

I remember the Neverhood! I never beat it because I was a little kid back then and frankly I found the game extremely confusing.

No way! Wow...

Mako was a great voice actor, and a great actor all around. To me, he's most memorable as the Wizard from the Conan movies and as Uncle Iroh in Avatar: the Last Airbender. He will certainly be missed.

Agreed, but most of it is. Nowadays you only have a Pixar movie every two years or so and occasionally a decent DreamWorks movie to count on. 2-D animation somehow became outdated with all this CGI hype and I'm glad to see the moviemaking folk appreciating it.

Frederator...isn't that the company that had a hand in Fairly Odd Parents? If so, this is either pretty good or really bad news. Fairly Odd Parents was acceptable and reasonably funny for a while, but then it went downhill on a sharp incline. So depending on their current style of animating, Frederator could either butcher these movies or turn them into incredible works of art. Expecting the former, hoping the latter.

Yeah, I was excited for this, but just remembered that about Mako. He was absolutely phenomenal as Aku, I don't know how they're gonna replace him.

I'm excited...but skeptical about Aku. I guess we'll just have to see how it goes.

Neverhood is an awesome game! I hope the movie will also be claymation... it'd be silly if it's CG or even traditional 2D. The article DOES say claymation... but one can't trust anything these days. I wonder if the original animation team will be used.

There are tons of Neverhood clips on YouTube.

EDIT: What am I saying? There's a clip of ever damnedable thing in the universe on YouTube.

The Neverhood was an AMAZING comepltely Claymation adventure games that was extremely difficult due to the fact that it took place in a world with it's own rules completely outside of any established reality.

It was supposed to be a series. -BUT-

The second one was a generic platformer on Playstation, and a direct rip-off of Donkey Kong Country (which was cool on SNES, not on Playstation). Never in history has a company so given such a thorough "SCREW YOU!" to it's fans, needless to say Neverhood fans didn't buy this, and Playstation fans never saw the appeal of a Donkey Kong Country clone with silly claymation cut scene. It was a total bomb and the series died.

I'm sure the poor-ass attempt to revive the concept will in fact be 2D animation, and probably piss-poor on account of noone being will to invest in doing it in stop-motion claymation.

Furthermore the only reason anyone EVER cared about the Neverhood is because they where intrigued by the concept of an adventure game done entirely in Claymation. Thye got a lot of fans this way, then turned on them. They have nothing to offer to get anymore.

They killed it. End of story.

P.S. There's no need to comment that you never heard of the Neverhood, don't care about claymation, and about how you think adventure games are stupid. I'm already well aware that you don't care, in fact what I'm saying is that there is no reason for you to care.

Agreed on some points. Skullmonkeys did seem like a complete crapper.

Things you should note though: Doug TenNapel did say on his forum at tennapel.com that they will be trying to get the original art department back, and that includes the music by Terry Whatshisface (Taylor?) who did all the music.

Furthermore, I don't think Doug TenNapel is much of a game (making or playing) fan, and is more focused on his graphic novels and seems to value storytelling more, so the odds of him bringing us a decent movie is probably higher than of him bringing us a good game.
