"Catch Me If You Can" the Next Broadway Movie Musical
by Fred Topel | July 01, 2007
Discuss Article
Movie and theater impresarios Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman have found another movie to turn into a Broadway smash. "Catch Me If You Can," the Leonardo DiCaprio/Christopher Walken movie will now be staged with song and dance numbers.

"Just the way we think, I watched the movie when we decided to do it and Christopher Walken has a great scene where he gives his son a checkbook," said Shaiman. "Whatever he says in that Christopher Walken way, it was a just a great little moment where now we've written a song where the father sings about in that checkbook, the way you manage your life, what you can do with just this little booklet."

Wittman suggested that the film will be less about Frank Abagnale's worldwide romp. "We chose that not because of the caper element of it. To both of us, it's much more about fathers and sons and family. The idea that if I say I'm a cop and you need a cop then I'm a cop, that's really what he did. He said I'm a doctor, if you need a doctor, I'll be the doctor. People want to believe what they're told."

"What was that noise?"

"Don't worry that was just Gilbert and Sullivan rolling over in their graves"

Ummm...
I could actually see this working. Seriously, not really hard to turn this into a musical. I can't say the same for the upcoming Spider-Man musical, but I'm stoked either way no matter how ridiculous it may be.

I had front row center tickets, but then the show close the week before my tickets. The reviews where pretty good, but obviously the ticket sales must have been pretty bad.

...speaking of bad musical, neither "Catch Me if You Can" nor "Spiderman" could POSSIBLY be as god-awful as Lestat which I had the displeasure of seeing in Previews prior to it's 3 week run.... it wasn't my idea, I assure you.

WICKED still the best musical out there right now. If you haven't seen I highly recommend it.

This will *ROCK*
I don't think they're thinking big enough with 'Spider-Man' as a musical. I think they should really go for what Broadway was meant for all along and make SPAWN into a musical.

Think about it; When Todd McFarlain wrote about a man ripped from the bloody maw of hell, given a demonic body and cursed powers and sent out with a satanic purpose, only to be distracted by revenge and lost passion for his wife and daughter, he was clearly thinking of a lavish Broadway production with glorious costumes, epic songs and intricately-choreographed dance numbers.

..Or Broadway and whoever else is coming up with this shit could get the righteous fuck over themselves, stop masturbating on a pile of comic books and DVD's and maybe preserve some vestige of their dignity.

Okay, *maybe* I'm a little cynical, but whoever saw Stan Lee and Steve Ditko's contribution to American lore and somehow thought 'Musical' almost certainly only did it in the last five years and saw dollar signs and that makes me want to beat the shit out of something.

Now back to your regularly scheduled string about 'Catch Me If You Can,' already in progress.

Legally Blonde was very disapppointing. Opening soon . . Young Frankenstein!

Originality, already vacating movie studios, is now escaping Broadway. Gonna miss him.
