Monsters vs. Aliens (2009)
Agrees With....
Posted on 11/11/09 at 11:16 PM It's like a big-budget alien invasion movie with lots of action, except it's animated, kid-friendly, and has lots of silly characters.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009)
Agrees With....
Posted on 11/11/09 at 11:12 PM A lot better than the second one. The first one is still the best. I was watching it while being distracted by kids and family - twice. It had cute characters, colorful backgrounds, and some exhilarating chase sequences. The climatic battle with the dinosaurs at the end is pretty fun.

Push (2009)
Agrees With....
Posted on 10/7/09 at 11:21 AM Crappy action scenes. It's mostly just people moving their arms around and their targets flying all over the place. Not very interesting. If you have the power to control peoples' minds, and you want them to kill someone, do you really have to give them a reason? Kinda dumb. I also don't get why it has to take place in HK. I don't really mind. It's just that the ADR work is pretty bad, so you can tell it's added in later and not the actual sounds from the environment.

Julie & Julia (2009)
Agrees With....
Posted on 9/8/09 at 4:51 PM | Last edited on 9/16/09 at 10:43 AM A lot better than I expected. Xuan wanted to see this one since she's a Food Channel addict. The parallel story of Julia Child and Julie Powell kept my interest from beginning to end. Each of them in separate movies might put me to sleep though. Hey, it's about blogging. It's about the internet. So, that got me interested. And it wasn't boring, far from it. It's got likable and charming characters. Afterward, I was checking out her blog in Salon.com. It's still there. It was so simple - just a title and a bunch of paragraphs. I was wondering if she made any money from the blog though. It doesn't seem like it. It seemed like she only made money out of the book and movie deals. I was trying to find out how many hits her blog was getting too. Nope, couldn't find it. She has a lot of comments, though.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009)
Agrees With....
Posted on 9/8/09 at 4:37 PM I'm a Stephen Sommers fan. Being a fan of action movies, I like his films the same way I like films from Michael Bay and Roland Emmerich. They're just good at mindless action movies. G.I. Joe is like a 2 hour live-action version of the cartoon, which is pretty much all I wanted to see. It was action-packed. Whatever story it had to tell, it randomly threw them in between action sequences in the form of flashbacks. Yes, whenever you can't tell a decent story, or have no idea how to tell it, just use flashbacks. The guy who plays Duke is a pretty bad actor. But, who cares. Who has time to think that kind of stuff, when you've got battles in sea, land, and air.
Actaphu on 9/9/09 at 8:54 PM I'd say it's a bit better than the cartoons because when the Joes and Pre-Cobra troops were battling, their weapons actually hit each other. 0 Replies

District 9 (2009)
Agrees With....
Posted on 9/8/09 at 4:27 PM | Last edited on 9/21/09 at 10:46 PM I can't believe the filmmakers were able to make this movie for just $30M. It looked like it costs a lot more. It was intense. Its originality kept me engaged. And the robotics at the end were pretty cool.
The Senhman on 9/16/09 at 10:42 AM Yeah, that was the best. Everytime there's a mech suit in a movie, it gets extra points from me - Aliens, Matrix sequels, Avatar (from the trailer). 0 Replies | RT-dubt on 9/18/09 at 3:51 PM Just saw this last weekend. Amazing they were able to pull it off for that budget. Makes you wonder what those $100+ million budget movies spend it all on, cheese dip? There were also some humorous elements in it that kept it a bit light. 0 Replies

Knowing (2009)
Agrees With....
Posted on 7/14/09 at 10:30 AM | Last edited on 7/14/09 at 10:33 AM These posters look awfully familiar to the ones for Armageddon. I guess it's fitting since they're both disaster movies about the end of the world. I prefer Armageddon though. That was silly and fun and had lots of cool action scenes.
Knowing was a strange concoction. It's a end of the world, disaster movie filmed like a horror movie. It's like the Ring mixed with - I don't know - any disaster movie. There's that creepy little girl that hears whispers. I had to finish this one alone cuz Xuan doesn't like horror movies. And I was scared watching it late at night. But it's a disaster movie! Damn it. I shouldn't be scared! I should just be enjoying watching people running around screaming while things get blown up behind them. There are stuff getting blown up, but a lot of it feels very passive. It's also very predictable. Xuan told me exactly what's gonna happen after the first 5 minutes. Still, I couldn't turn it off. It's eeriness drew me in. 0 Comments

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009)
Agrees With....
Posted on 6/30/09 at 12:36 PM | Last edited on 6/30/09 at 4:29 PM I liked the first Transformers. All I wanted to see was a bunch of giant robots transform and battle each other. And the first one did that really well.
All I was looking for in the second one was more of that, and the film delivered that in spades. I was glad to see Starscream quarrel with Megatron. I like the sound of Soundwave. Devastor turned into some kind of animal-monster thingy - I was ok with it. The transformation was kinda cool, with each of them being pulled together reluctantly (it seems). Jetfire and Optimus combining was pretty cool. My only complaint is that there's no Jetfire/Optimus vs. Devastor. That would have been a much more climactic battle. If you like Michael Bay movies - and I do - then this is like the mother of all Michael Bay movies. There's the dirty jokes from the Bad Boys movies; battle scenes from Pearl Harbor; and meteor destruction scenes from Armageddon. It almost seems like they are copied and pasted into the film. I didn't like the amount of horny-teenager humor in the film though. There's more than a couple unnecessary dog-humping scenes. There's also way too many models with fake boobies. There wasn't much of that in the first film. The teens sitting behind me didn't mind them at all. All I hear from them was "Niiiice..." If I have a teenage son, and I'm watching the film with him, I would feel kinda awkward. Yeah, they're easy to write, but completely unnecessary and not really funny. Xuan hated the movie :) I bought the first Transformers, but not sure if I should buy this one. Actaphu on 6/30/09 at 2:47 PM Frank Welker voiced Soundwave in this movie and he voiced him in the original cartoons too. Fun fact, he also voiced the original Megatron. 1 Reply | The Senhman on 6/30/09 at 4:43 PM Oh really. Interesting. Now, they need to bring on the Dinobots for part 3. 0 Replies

Up (2009)
Agrees With....
Posted on 6/14/09 at 1:14 PM Even though most the thrilling action sequences occur during the second half of the film, it's the quieter first half I like the most.
The film, in general, reminds me of a Miyazaki film. It takes its time to tell the story and doesn't feel hurried, until the end. There's also lots of breathtaking panoramic views of the South American landscapes. 0 Comments

Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008)
Agrees With....
Posted on 7/24/08 at 3:19 PM Wall E - A cute, love story - with robots and lots of bubbly people.
Hellboy II - The fight scenes were well choreographed, but otherwise, it's just a little bit better than the first. The problem is everything seems too easy for Hellboy. He's too laid back. It needed some suspense. The Dark Knight - I liked it a lot more than the first one. I was one of those who thought the first one needed a little bit more bang - a bit more Michael Bay, yeah, I know, that's blesphamous. I went into it knowing that it's a long movie, but I thought it was well-paced. The twist and turns were good - not something you usually find in a comic book movie. 0 Comments
